The recent thread about La Palma has got me thinking about a winter sun getaway this year for the first time in a long while ... My mother made the suggestion of Madeira - just looked at a few photos and it does look rather appealing! Has anyone been there or knows anything about it? If anyone has any recommendations for other 'reasonably priced' European destinations I'm all ears ...

I'll be going to Madeira in 4 weeks It's difficult to find anyone who has been and so I would also be grateful for any information . I've been to Majorca on several occassions at this time of year and can thoroughly recommend it , and it's just over two hours on the plane

A work colleague went there a couple of months ago and enjoyed it immensely and it's somewhere that I've always had half a notion to go to someday. Inspired by hearing of her visit, I spent some time flying around the place using Google Earth and Streetview and it looks like a fascinating place from a landscape point of view, which is something that interests me rather more than spending time on a beach(!) There is an interesting semi-tropical rain forest which is a rare remnant of a now much depleted and previously more widespread southern European Laurel forest habitat. The cliffs and mountains look fabulous and there is a network of canals/aqueducts up there that provide some great hiking opportunities. Apparently, it's a great place to go whale watching from too.

On a budget I'd go for the Costa del Sol or the Algarve , if you can leave your booking late and check the weather is ok . Best weather site for Spain www.eltiempo.es/

It's very warm (22 degrees) and sunny here Jules at the moment, might be a bit too far to come though! Yesterday afternoon round the corner . . . I really like Malta, a bit different and the islands history is fascinating.

I was and those pictures are China, the Malta bit was a footnote to the OP question All good at the moment Brian, settling in gradually. Shopping is tricky though, nothing is written in English and no-one speaks English in the shops and markets and my Manderin is not much more than hello, please and thankyou at the moment!

You'll get there Tim . Unfortunately you can't go to a place like China and feel at home straight away . Sounds like life is just one big adventure at the moment ( even when buying stuff )The place looks beautiful whether it's Malta or China
