I am building some OB speakers and have amps for my 12" bass/mid and AMT tweeter. I am putting some 18" drivers in U frames and need an amp to drive them up to the crossover point between 300 and 400 Hz. Was looking at £ 200 to £300 pro chip amps from Blue Aran like behringer and Crown and wondered if they would sound ok at that frequency as well as sounding ok at lower bass. The drivers are 99dB efficiency so don't need power but good control is desirable. What would you use in this situation? Keith.

Hi Keith,
I've run an iNuke up to 150Hz with no issues using a couple of different 18 inch drivers. I expect 300 / 400 Hz would be fine. You may even find the xover point can be lower with a shallow slope vs higher with a steep slope.

Thanks Clive for your reply, I don't need the crossover functions of the I nuke as I will be using a Najda Dac/Pre/Digital crossover so only concerned if sound quality will be compromised by using it up to 300 or 400 Hz? Trying to find out whether it would be ok are there better options out there? Keith.

You can get the inuke without dsp I think you need to go for one the 6000 or 3000 rather than 1000 as when we tried it between 300 to 500hz on Speedy Steve horn system it was not great. But below it was great I have heard my friends 6000 and that does not have the same issues as my 1000 at that range

If you just want an amp and don't need dsp etc then you could simply buy a used power amp. A quad 405 at 100W might do it or you could find something more like 250W.

Good Quad 405's are now fetching such silly money, I think something like a Crown XLS1500 bought new for not much over £300 should be fine, and also designed for continuous power. Jerry here had one for a good while (for him anyway) and it certainly wasn't disliked if I remember correctly - and this as an amp for full range use.

Thanks for the responses chaps. I think the pro audio route is the way to go. I like the look of the Crown xls1002 or 1502. Will discuss with Blue Aran when I order the drivers. John, it was Speedysteve who advised against using the INuke if going up to 300 to 400 although fine if going up to 100 or just over so I was after something of similar price that would be more comfortable higher up relatively. Speedysteve is building my Najda DSP. Keith.

A Crown would be ideal and stonkingly powerful. I wouldn't use a Quad for bass duties, they just don't have the balls.

For sure more power will always for good for bass (which is why I mentioned 250W)...I'd agree re the Crown. A Quad could do better than you think as the bass drivers are very sensitive at 99db/m - this makes a humongous difference vs say 86db drivers.

Thanks chaps, probably going for the Crown XLi1500 which is way overpowered for the sensitivity but that shouldn't be a problem. The damping factor over 200 should be very beneficial though? Having said that I heard these drivers being driven by a 5W PX25 amp at Scalford last weekend and noticed no lack of control. Would rather rely on greater damping factor though with 18" cones to flap about!
