Jules asked me to step in for the March classical music choice
I enjoy a good violin concerto and when I used to practise guitar I would try and incorporate a lot of classical ideas into my playing I even transcribed the first movement of this for guitar
Sibelius violin Concerto is a very romantic piece of music I enjoy this interpretation because it seems to connect emotionally for me. There must be other versions perhaps even better but this is the version that got me into this concerto.
I hope people can enjoy it

Thanks for this John!
The Sibelius is a great favourite of mine and have heard it played live a number of times - will be interested to see how this performance shapes up...

I've got a couple of versions of this and (still) my favourite is the Esther Yoo / Philharmonia Orchestra / Vladimir Ashkenazy reading. I do appreciate this version though so an 8/10 for me.

It's strange but this has never entered my regular playlist of violin concertos. I've seen it live a couple of times and still my mind refuses to put it into my shortlist of greats. I can't really say why, it's just the way it is.
I'm playing this version and, apart from the third movement which I recognise well, it's still not hooking me in. No Sibelius does apart from Finlandia.
Sorry, 5/10.

I reckon I've got some Sibelius you will like Martin ... I'll see if I can find something.

I personally prefer a darker reading with a bit more fire and intensity but always a pleasure to listen to this concerto … There’s some interesting background to this concerto. When first premiered it was a total disaster for a number of reasons, to such an extent that Sib made some serious revisions … Now I didn’t know that only in 1991 did Sibelius’s heirs allow the original (and more demanding) work to be played and recorded just the once, by Leonidas Kavakos with Osmo Vanska. The recording is on the BIS label - I've seen Kavakos perform the concerto at the Barbican but now not sure which version he was playing - I will for sure listen to this version.

Finally got my RPi2 sorted (had to re-blast the SD card), logged into Spotify and am playing the above Kavakos version. Scandinavian orchestras have always impressed me and this is no exception. Lovely playing, now waiting for the spark...
