Vangelis made a large contribution to the atmosphere, too. True, the perfect accompaniment. I have alway been interested in Rutger Hauer's comments about the film. He seems to still think it was pretentious rubbish and regrets appearing in it. Shame, as I thought he was one of those that made it believable.

Am I alone in rather enjoying Hugh (the wooden) Grant's films. I still watch 4 Weddings and Notting Hill occasionally. I put them on a par with the likes of Potter. Harmless fun that while away a few hours, washed down with a glass or two of the red stuff. Not everything has to be deeply meaningful or intellectually stimulating. My favourite film of all time is Forbidden Planet. Shakespeare would have been proud

I agree about the script but not sure we are talking about the same Mr Grant My wooden man has a few problems actually acting but is very pretty neither of which applies to Richard E Grant who played in Withnail . Coming from someone who has trouble getting his own name right, this is not something to worry too much about. However, the performance was, as you say sublime and it remains very close to the top of my list. Talking of old fims, just watched the original Star Wars It was a bit clunkier than I remembered but still fun. Not sure it would make the top 100 though.

Richard E Grant in "Withnall and I" is fab - I still remember embarrassing a girlfriend by laughing out loud in the Cinema ... "There's a gigantic spade in the bath"

I tried Cloud Atlas last night and gave up after an hour or so. Probably the worst film I have seen, especially given the budget and cast. I can't see why it divided critics, the mind boggles that anyone would find it compelling.

I would have thought it quite difficult to follow if you had not already read the book.

Now back to the "African Queen".
