Absolutely ESSENTIAL viewing for piano music devotees - 'Perfect Pianists at the BBC' www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0729r6r/perfect-pianists-at-the-bbcThis programme trawls the BBC music archive and shows some remarkable footage of piano greats, from mesmerizing Rubenstein playing Chopin in his 80's (and a fascinating interview clip), to more recently Evgeny Kissin nailing Rach 2. I've already watched it a couple of times - there's even a double treat for Martin T in there!

- there's even a double treat for Martin T in there! What?! - have they transcribed the Four Seasons for piano duet? I shall watch it later, thanks for the tip, Julian, it sounds fascinating.

Glenn Gould is fascinating! I love his comments about the old warhorse Tchaikovsky. Have to agree with him.

Lupu's trademark kitchen chair --- ?? Amazing anecdote about Richter smoking in bed for days of his paid recording contract period intended for rehearsal and recording, and then turning up at the studio to do an astonishing Chopin recording straight off the bat and then vanishing. Gould's recording of WtC onboard Voyager 1 - I didn't know that! Hough's Rachmaninov playing was astonishing. And how like Patrick Moore the presenter is!! Fascinating programme - thanks Julian

OK - so Lupu was one - kitchen chair and all.
Who was the other MartinT fave?

Gould's recording of WtC onboard Voyager 1 - I didn't know that! I vaguely remembered it. So good that something truly great has gone out there, representing the best of humanity. ...hopefully the entity looking for VGER's creator will look kindly on us!!

OK - so Lupu was one - kitchen chair and all. Who was the other MartinT fave? Argerich didn't make an appearance, so I'm guessing Jules meant Gould. Lupu and Gould will do nicely!

I saw Lupu live just the once. I don't remember a kitchen chair but I do remember the playing. I've never forgotten it.
