I did toy with that idea, actually, Martin. It would need some careful measuring and clever angled cuts to make them slot together securely, but not beyond the wit of man, I don't suppose.

Thanks for confirming. I knew the Peerless mids cannot be replaced and I repaired (rather than replaced) the foam surrounds very carefully with watered down glue, which worked well. I rescued one tweeter and bought a mesh grill since one of them had gone missing. All in all, I ended up repairing 7 of the 8 drivers and building two crossovers from scratch as the originals were completely destroyed. I bought 4 pairs of the Peerless midranges from the last production run .Madisound were selling them about 7 years ago. In most instances the original midranges have been compromised by exactly the process you describe. They should not have any doping/glue on them. The Gales spring to life and really open up once they have unadulterated midranges installed. That means sourcing a pair that have not been played with and having new foam surrounds installed. The surrounds also should have the concave profile. Sometimes the spiders also need replacing on the woofers. That would also apply to the ARs.

I have spare surrounds for the mids so could replace them at any time. The cones are perfectly untouched.

Very interesting your work on your LSTs.Do you have the address where you got the foam surrounds.Fred Built was the name mentioned.I have a pair of MST 2s I bought new in the seventies whichever reforming.I want to rejuvenate then and try as studio monitors.I loved them when I used them but time and storage have taken their toll on the woofer surrounds many thanks.Jimmo

Yes, Fred at Audiofriends in the Netherlands. Your MST use the same drivers as the AR-5 speakers, I think. If he doesn't list them specifically on his site, just send him a message. He is very helpful. I have had drivers for AR-2xa, 44bx, LST among other speakers from him.

Here you go. Fred's page for the MST surrounds is here. Also, for a bit more cash when you factor in the postage, Vintage AR in the USA sell a full kit including dust covers. Vintage AR - Ebay link It seems my memory fails me - the drivers are the same as for the AR-6 and 7. The 5 had a 10" woofer like the 2xa

Wasn't it 2ax?

Actually yes, that's what I meant to type. BUT...the reason for my confusion is that there was a 2, 2a, 2x, 2ax and a 2xa!
This is from Tom Tyson, an American AR employee, on the Classic Speaker forum:

Well, I learned something there. I had a friend with 2ax speakers and loved them. Never heard of a 2xa!

Very good price for a sweet little pair of speakers. 100 quid to refoam them. Under 20 to DIY.
