just bought a pair of Spendor S8s boxed and in showroom condition (not a mark on them !!) for £400 , anybody out there got a pair ?? first thing that struck me was that they are music lovers 'speakers' and not tiring to listen to , would like to hear the views of anybody who has/ had a pair

Never heard them I'm afraid, but the price is very good. DSJR will certainly have heard them.

I sold plenty of these and love them dearly, along with the smaller S6's. £400 is half what I'd expect them to sell for, so (hopefully) well done!
HOWEVER -
The bass to midrange is quite powerful as you'd expect from the heritage the then new owners inherited, but NOT boomy, over-ripe and lush like older Spendors could be (the SP1 models when working properly are long time favourites, but the SP1/2 suffers surround hardening as do the SP2/2 onwards). This is one speaker that worked well with Chord Odyssey speaker cables, although other speakers sound over hyped and 'false' with this cable I later found, but not the Spendor S series and similar. Place a good few inches out from a back wall, but they don't need to be in free space and toe them in. We always kept the grilles on, but the finish is so good you could take them off if you feel that way inclined.
Not sure what amps I could recommend today, but Olive and current-case bigger Naims worked well (not the weedy Nait 3 or harsh Nait 5 or 5i), Rega Elex R and Elicit R should be fine and (I have to say this) NVA amps have a usefully light texture and unforced clarity. If Krellman has one of Krell's amps then he needn't look further, as even the baby KAV300i was brilliant here with them and they'd 'grow' with bigger models.
