I decided to download a free version of Audacity it came attached with lots of nasty software, virus, etc. Initially I tried to delete the unwanted files from control panel but the system just kept bringing them back. I did a malware sweep and over 800 threats.. I then started to look into my program files and deleted what I could I got AVG installed and did a full system search. As by this time windows defender was taken over. It found quite a few virus that I was able to remove.
I still could not get my default browser to work it kept taking me to a site I did not trust so I finally did a system restore. I finally got my computer windows defender is again working and I do not have anything trying to take over my system.
When I deleting files at one point it tried to delete my program files but managed to stop it
The computer has been behaving for the last 4 hours so relief

It's not the fault of Audacity, which is a perfectly good tool - I've been caught out like this a few times.
You have to be real careful with these things because if you just Google 'Audacity' you will get links to a number of sites claiming to be the download. Most of these will fill your PC up with irrelevant junk. You should go to the REAL audacity site which I think is 'Audacityteam.org' and you shouldn't then get the rubbish.
Same applies of course to any software download - try to go to the real source and not a third party download site.

Yes the scary bit was that I thought I was downloading from the real site but it must of been a bogus site

OK, so the legit version is OK but be careful when downloading from secondary sites. What does Audacity do that I can't do already?

Thankfully Mac download just worked (once licence paid for)
A useful lesson on watching your sources

If you use a decent adblocker then it will screen out a lot junk/malicious links also - can help to prevent this sort of thing.
Audacity is great though.

OK, so the legit version is OK but be careful when downloading from secondary sites. What does Audacity do that I can't do already? It is, to quote: "free, open source, cross-platform software for recording and editing sounds"We used it extensively at the University for recording, processing and editing speech samples - it's one of the best 'freebies'. It also does effects and is quite good at noise removal etc.. Not sure there's anything I'd use it for in music. dbpoweramp is the one I use for music conversion, tag editing, etc..

Audacity is very good and safe software - the danger comes when trying to download it from an unknown site - have seen this many times at work where folk think they are clicking the right download button or link, but in fact it's another program on the same page. It's a nightmare on some download sites with big green download buttons and many are Trojan's. You have to be very careful here and if you can, download it on another machine first. I have an old netbook that I use to test what I think might be potentially dodgy downloads before letting them loose on my main machine Glad you got it sorted John.

Been there and done that (not with an Audacity download though)
On my netbook and inadvertently clicked on the wrong button on a downloads page, next thing I knew the browser started generating new browser bars like there was no tomorrow. Every time I deleted one another would appear etc etc. All of them had built in links to junk sites. Tried every which way to get rid and in the end had to wipe the disk and and reinstall Windows. Thankfully this got rid for good ...

Incidentally Audacity is a cracking package that I have used a lot since discovering it about a decade ago. Now mostly for transcribing vinyl or recording the occasional prog off the radio but used to use it a lot for tidying up audio for video use and AV presentations.

Bugs a big issue with the net, glad you managed to sort it John.
This is why I have a stand alone dedicated network for maximum SQ totally isolated from the net and a basic streamer for radio duties.

Try Last Known Good configuration if it gives you the option. Are we talking Windows here?

Win 10 pre-installed. I had a " service registration is missing or corrupt " message after running a windows fix. Only had it a couple of days (Dell laptop). Took it back. Shame really as I quite win 10 in the brief time I've used it. It wouldn't even restart to give me any other options. An odd thing also is win 10 pc's shipping with mcafee live safe which isn't compatible with edge browser yet.

Sounds like you got a virus Paul and pretty nasty one at that. I would of kept to Windows defender One of the things my laptop was trying to do was getting me to click onto a link as was saying W10 was no longer updated or valid(something like that). I had to keep stopping it until I got the laptop under control. Also when cleaning the files it tried to delete my program files but managed to stop it. This would of caused my laptop to fail

Computer problems? Is it actually the computers or the users . . . we all blame 'the computer', but most seem fine until you add a dodgy user or dodgy software. Just sayin' and I'm no different, but fortunately I have learned how to fix my cock ups
