Hmm. Rather a worrying article - it seems to be saying that any sealed-earbud will initiate the volume threshold response to make you turn them up to unsafe levels. Is that right do you think?

I'll be having a pretty comprehensive hearing and pressure test in a couple of weeks, as part of an investigation into something else, so we'll see!

Thankfully I never use them, they won't stay in. Headphones only

I use Flare Audio R2a IEM - really good sound. Well, I used to use them until I read that article.

Hmmm. Just bought a new set of buds-type earphones to go with the new smart phone thingy. Perhaps I need to reconsider. Thanks for pointing out this article...I think.

I try not to use them that often these days, if I do it's at low volume. I did start to suffer from very mild tinnitus in my left ear, possibly more due to the amount of live music I go to, but better to be cautious. I now use a pair of open backed Sennheiser PX 100 II with my portable devices and I have not noticed any ringing in my left ear for sometime now and I keep an eye on the volume too.
Plus my Soundmagic earbuds came apart, the glue holding the barrel assembly gave way, first on the right bud, which I super-glued, then the left gave way and I haven't bothered to fix it. Bit of a design flaw there?

I do find loud concerts to be annoying rather than enjoyable now.

Had a few different buds - hate 'em; all the faff getting them in properly just to be hermetically sealed from the outside world and not hear the car that runs you over....
On the subject of tinnitus, I had regular visits to an ear specialist in the late 80s after some severe ringing developed in one ear. The specialist was the spitting image of James Robertson Justice with the volume of Brian Blessed; when I told him I used to mix live gigs and had heard that could do damage he guffawed and said that was 'absolute bloody nonsense'. Turned out the tinnitus was most likely caused by a virus caught while swimming in the sea at a polluted stretch of coast.

That's exactly what I need on aircraft, though, where my Soundmagic in-ears give wonderful service. Best use for them for sure, not bulky like a pair of Bose noise cancelling, and a tenth the price! I might buy some more Soundmagic's just for flying as I like them. I may also email the company some pictures of what happened to them, to see what they say - I can't believe I'm the only one it has happened too? The casing came apart on both ear-buds.

I've been using Creative EP-630 buds for ages and you can pick them up for under a tenner on eBay at the moment. For the price they're well worth a listen.

I use Sony in-ear buds. I think I paid about 60 pounds for them. They sound very good with my Neco headphone amp and iPod classic.
