Yesterday i was cleaning out a cupboard & found two turntable mats, Not going to name any names because brands always blind peoples judgements No.1 - 3mm Acrylic Matt No.2 - 3mm Rubber matt from some old 70's turntable I generally don't bothered with this type of thing any more but i was a bit bord.. My turntable has a red velour bonded Matt so really no need for a mat but hey ho.. on goes Mat No.1.. In the Bass i noticed an immediate heavyness, off with that & on with the Mat No.2.. Bass not as heavy but i noticed that there was more air around the music compared to the Acrylic Matt.Back off with the matt back to no matt. I thought the Rubber matt best.. Suprised me a bit cos it being a cheapo Rubber mat from some cheapo table. Goes to show eh..

Interesting outcome. I experimented with mats for my Garrard 401 and in the end concluded that the original rubber mat on it's own sounded the best.

With a 301, a SpaceMat on top of the Garrard mat worked a dream.. This was recommended for the 401 as well, but I never got the chance to try it.

My 401 came without a mat.
A forum member (some years ago) found several Japanese rubber mats that fit the 401 perfectly in a skip (yes really) and let me have one FOC.
Does me.
