(or close friends - unless you can abuse them back by getting them to waste hours on your hifi pimping ideas)
I have just been dealing with my sisters tax affairs. It has been the usual nightmare with her bookkeeping, including a spreadsheet with completely invalid formulae (it only had to add up) producing a result that was out by a factor of 4
I had to go back through bank statements and self-billing invoice copies. Anyway having done all that, I went to submit her tax return - which rejected with an HMRC "authentication error" Now I get these from time to time, when I reinstall software. But I hadn't. So I tried submitting another clients return - no problems Rather than face the despair which is 24 hours on hold for HMRC's support, I put in a support ticket to my software supplier
The short version (and it took a lot of steps getting there) is she had given me the wrong Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) - she had supplied her company number instead of personal one. But because it WAS the RIGHT company UTR, it passed the validation checks for a UTR - it just didnt match the client record.
Just what I need at this time of year. It's always the same with friends and family.

I'm not going to get any work done. Sue has just appeared outside the window of the office to mime "I'm just taking Harry to the train station" Think of a 2 arm nursery school mime for a choochoo train, with a bit of added hip-sway, and you'll see how easily that can be mis-interpreted. It did seem odd at 10.00 when I am supposed to be at work, but at my age - never pass up an opportunity

The first one sounds like 'normal' people. I confess to not being perfect as you probably think. The second one....oh yes
