I'm struggling to get a Pi and Digi+ to work wirelessly and hoping for some help. About this time last year, I got my first Pi together and it worked fine first time. I wasn't really intending to use it via wi-fi, so although I did try to configure it just as an experiment, I failed after a couple of attempts and just plugged the network cable back in and forgot about it.
Now I got another Pi in November and intended to use this one with a wireless link to the network. It was just the basic device with no piggy back boards, using Volumio via USB into an external DAC and trying it with the same dongle as I had previously failed with, it worked first time with no problems. Great!
Then, while playing files from the NAS, it started to drop the ball a bit every now and then, dropping audio output momentarily. Last week, I got myself another Digi+ and after installing it, I have been completely unable to get the thing to work properly with the wireless connection. It is fine with the network cable but when I attempted to configure it for wireless working, the best I could get was half second spurts of output about every ten seconds.
Yesterday, I tried dumping Volumio for Moode and now I don't even get the half second snatches of music. EDIT (additional info) : I don't seem to be able to configure the Pi to allow wireless working - it just won't hook itself onto the network. Again, it works fine with the cabled connection. and for set-up obviously, the router is in the same room as the Pi, so it's not a signal strength problem.
Any help would be appreciated but please assume that my knowledge of computing falls somewhat short of your basic MkI abacus!

In my experience with the Pi not all wifi dongles are created equally.
I originally had a newly acquired Netgear dongle - worked fine with Volumio but sporadically with Moode.
Currently using one off eBay which is claimed to be for the Pi (cheap as chips) and it works fine with both systems, albeit with very occasional dropouts when accessing a shared folder on my Mac.

I wonder if it's down to the density of data when you're streaming, that is if you're streaming WAV files. Chris, you have PM.

Thanks for the replies chaps (and PM Chris). I need to dash out for a short while - I'll reply properly soon if that's OK?

The most pressing issue is that at the moment, I can't get the thing to even connect to the network. I'm using a dongle that I know did work not that long ago and I've tried plugging it into of the USB sockets. Chris' suggestion may be useful late, but not just yet!

You have entered the appropriate login credentials for your network, haven't you? They're not stored on the dongle.

Didn't you have this issue before with that dongle, Chris? Can you try the dongle from the other one for comparison?

Also, have you got PuTTY running, to configure it behind the scenes?

Yes to Chris - correct login and password for the network.
To Martin - the other Pi has always been connected via a network cable apart from the brief attempt I made to try wi-fi when I first got it - yes the dongle gave me problems so I gave up. However, when I got this Pi I tried the dongle and it worked fine first time. Since then, it has deteriorated with some drop-outs to the music, hence decision to start afresh with a new software installation (this time of Moode).

No putty this time around - I just want to make the bloody thing work before I start fiddling with the fundamentals.

Correct security protocol? (WEP or WPA etc..) Do you have another wifi dongle you could try?

I'm on BT - I've selected WPA/WPA2 - Personal. I think that's correct. I don't have another dongle, I'll have to try to get another from somewhere.

I think the dongle is the Prime Suspect here.
I asked about PuTTY because there are things you can do in the OS to configure Wi-Fi, but the dongle appears to have croaked.

When I tried the Edimax wifi dongle on my Pi, although it is supported on the Pi, the only way I got it working on my Pi 2 was to install a custom driver file, it took me ages to google and find a fix for the issue, if I remember right you had to have it 'wired' to begin with, add the edited files then reboot with the only the dongle attached.
I'll see if I book marked it in my favs, pretty sure I have the actual files needed somewhere on my NAS in case I needed them in the future.
I eventually went wired with power line adapters, much simpler.
Mike.
Ps: mind you this was to get the dongle to work at the outset, if yours has been working and now failing it might be goosed.

Yep, I have one ordered now, so hopefully it will arrive soon and be resolved easily. Thanks for offering the above info though and a link to the page where you found your fix might be useful anyway, if not to me then perhaps to others. Cheers

Raspberry Pi dongleI have 2 of these and they are plug and play. Range can be an issue if you are on the edge - I use a wifi booster to reach the far corner of the house. I also prefer the squeezebox interface to volumio - that too is more plug and play to set up. Not that I have used them much recently - sorting out file based in all its aspects is on my "to do in France" list

An update on this - the new dongle arrived today. I wasn't taking any chances, so I bought one with a socking great aerial up its jacksie! Of course, it works fine with absolutely no problems whatsoever. The aerial was, I'm sure rather over-egging the pudding because, although the Pi is going upstairs, it will be a mere 4 metres or so from the router. Thanks for the advice folks. I'm trying out the latest version of Rune Audio this evening. It's a bit fiddly to configure it to work with the HiFiBerry Digi+, as you have to edit one of the files that comes in the zipped download folder. It took a little while to work out that little nugget of information but I got there in the end. So, two Pis working properly at last.

Nice one Chris. I have three in active service now, but the one in the kitchen is at the opposite end of the flat from the router, and we get intermittent drop-outs (and seem to lose the signal entirely when the microwave is in use) so something like this would most likely be worth a go.

Well done, Chris. Two in service with me: the Pi2 downstairs running a HiFiBerry Digi+ into the Caiman-II; The original Pi upstairs running an IQaudIO Pi-DAC into headphones.
