I'm going to try some KT88s in my Audion. As I have never ran 88s in any amp, I'm looking for advice. The three main ones that come up are JJ Tesla, Electro Harmonix and PSVANE (not sure how you pronounce that one). I'm also seeing Shuguang Treasures (used) that are somewhat tempting, although i think I'd rather buy new.
Anyone played withnanynof these or heard them in a system? Any input is greatly appreciated, because my own experience is a big fat ZERO

I guess I should add Gold Lion KT88s thanks to Philip's link and the low prices!

I would gamble on ElectroHarmonix based on my experience of all their valves of other values in my system. I use their 300B's and love them for their sparkle, bounce, authority and clarity of sound with good extension low and high. I am now on my third set. I know several others who would endorse what I have said. I've also used their small signal and driver valves with the same experience. Many of them are Russian made or at least, used to be. Remember, you can directly swap in 6550's which in my experience are a little more refined and of course, depending on the capability of your amp, KT90, KT120 and KT150 are also a straight swap in. For these three, you need to check that you mains Tx can deliver the necessary current. If you are clueless on this, I suggest you join www.audio-talk.co.uk/phpBB3/index.php?sid=51d6e6e3ce4cba1d8a6d9d5344ad297f and post a question there. Everyone is very flame free and very helpful. You won't regret approaching them

Cheers, Greg. My only experience of Electro Harmonix was their EL34 which Iiked. I'm currently running KT120s which I find a little "heavy" sounding and a bit too smooth. I like something a little more vivid and lively.
I've tried 6550 based amps in the past, but they we a bit too refined for my tastes. My favourites so far were original EI KT90s but they are hard to find NOS and probably beyond my budget. I can find used ones but I'd like more certainty than they can offer.

They are Tung Sols. I was told they have been cryo treated if that anything to go by. I really like thebpowerfulness they offer, but I miss those EI KT90s a lot.

Up to about 18 months ago I was an incurable tube roller. Tried many KT88's and in several amplifiers. I invariably ended up with Gold Lions and usually from Mark at Hotrox. Enjoy the ride.
