Although don't do what I did and made the mistake of rushing and buying a replacement. I had a very good Fujitsu 42" Plasma for about 8 years and chose to replace it earlier this year with a Panasonic LCD on a Sainsburys bargain basement deal for about £300, and whilst it is great on high resolution material it is atrocious on standard such as DVD and encoded Films streamed via my Apple TV!

It's effectively a small video DAC.

Yes. Reading reviews of some I see that the HD is great and the SD is horrid. That would be a pain

It's effectively a small video DAC. More wonders of our modern age. There was me thinking it was just wiring from one socket to another ! (Techie is not me)

A HDMI rigged SCART will not be same as a true HDMI imho Nope doubt it but it's an option if like Mike you have a treasured piece of hardware you want to continue using.

This would be transitional. I watch almost no DVDs. 99% of all I watch is via the Tivo. Nothing live My aim is to watch less TV. Just need to organise that with the boss

But that is why i said earlier that these new TV's will carry at least one SCART. Like Blue Ray machines will play standard DVD's.. They have to cater for people at the end of the day, They cannot just cut people off.

That's not entirely true in my Panasonic LCD's case as it doesn't have any SCART sockets available

Take joe public for instance who wants a new TV, has HDMI Equipment but still wants to used their old Sattelite box which only has a SCART. The customer will then pass that sale buy, purchasing another companies model. This is the reason i would have thought it important to offer at least one SCART.In this day & age were every sale is important you cannot afford to throw sales away so for heaven sake manufactures must cater for the public while still keeping in on the latest technology offerings..
I for one will not entertain connection adaptors, if it does not have what i want i move on to something that does.
Just my view

Maybe the ones who don't add a SCART connector are trying to nudge their customers into buying an extra box - therefore, one more sale not one less.

Don't really understand the need for a Scart connector in this context - I have a TIVO box and it has an HDMI out and this is what I use with our aging Samsung LCD TV, with great results. The Samsung has a Scart input but this would be a step back IMO, particularly for sound. I have only ever used it to playback some SVHS tapes of family movies.

Decided I'd finally had enough of the TV after watching Casino Royale and the blacks constantly pixelating, so placed an order and received a lovely Panasonic 55" 4K which arrived last Sunday and, yes so it was twice the price of the previous one but you can certainly see why. The blacks are perfect (even on SD material such as the Apple TV encoded movies) and on HD it is out of this world. Bonus we managed to get £150 for the old TV, yes after 6 months isn't a lot but helped convince wifey it was a good idea, which always helps

I always liked Panasonic picture quality, but I live in a TV free zone

I like my Panny HD plasma a lot. Will probably go 4K OLED next, but will wait for Sky 4K broadcasts to start.

For non hi-definition, I don't think you can beat CRT :-)

It depends on the model - generally, the more you pay the better quality upscaling chips it uses. There is no way that a CRT can compete with a good flat screen running decent upscaling. My partner has a Panasonic CRT and her Sony flat panel kills it even on SD. Mind you, I only watch HD programming.
