I'll try this when I've got more chance of buying one.

Nice review Greg, just sorry that I was unable to get to your place for a listen. May I be added to the loan list at some point please?

I have now had the loan BMU for a while and been able to evaluate it carefully with a wide variety of music. My overall conclusion is that it is a simple, well-designed product which gives a significant, value for money improvement.
The BMU is heavy, and feels and looks like a quality product. It was completely silent when in use here.
I tried it with both cds and streamed flac and hi-res files. The changes it produced were clear but subtle rather than dramatic, and slightly hard to describe. The easiest thing to say it that is seemed to clear out the overall sound such that each instrument/voice could be identified/heard more precisely. It also upped the volume a bit, and added to the presence of the sound. As others have said, it especially seems to enhance the sound of drums and cymbals and bass guitar. The dirty bass on Peter Gabriel's "Lovetown" for example is cleaned up and grabs you more than ever when the BMU is in place.
To be truthful, I do not feel I experienced the "night and day" improvements that some of the other reviews has described. This could be because I am lucky to have fairly clean mains where I live, and because the Bryston pre and power amps I use are known for their superior electronics. The BMU is, however, a clear step-up and did produce a much better resolution and improved dynamics with every track I played. One of the best instances of this is Paul Weller's "Wild Wood" - a track that is quite sparse and slowly builds to a strong end.
Overall, I like what the BMU does and will almost certainly get one. The NVA Loan Scheme has enabled me to test it properly and I am very grateful for that. (Special thanks to DSJR for all his help and patience!) It has also made me keen to try the TIS which has been similarly well-reviewed via the Loan Scheme. It will be interesting to see if the TIS makes an equally impressive improvement.

Many thanks for the review. TIS should be available shortly and best to look at the comments on HFS perhaps? Basically, the TIS is, or could be, the icing on an already good cake, whereas the BMU is perhaps a bit more fundamental, the former only really showing it's true worth in wider-open systems, but the latter possibly benefiting everything at almost any price - possibly Shall I add you on the TIS list?

I'd agree with that - the BMU or a regenerator make a fundamental jump in system musicality, the TIS is for well sorted systems that need and are capable of extra transparency and insight.

Still very pleased with the BMU after a few weeks of it in use here. One thing which is interesting to note concerns the warm up time when switching on from stone cold. The system used to sound OK from the off, and after 15 or 20 minutes, it really came on song. Nowadays, it sounds just awful for the first 5 minutes - bright, thin, hollow - just nasty! After that 15 minutes or so, it is just fantastic, the best it's ever been in this room.
Why should it be so much worse from switch on, I wonder?

Is that switching on just the system, Chris, or the BMU too?

I keep the BMU plugged in but everything else except the phono stage is off when not being used. So switch on is preamp first (with 2 minute muted delay), power amps and whichever source will be in use.

The loan BMU is with me and suffered a bit in the transit here - no fault of the previous user, who packed it well for transit. It meant I was able to look inside and confirm no damage apart from a weak clip where the socket had popped open originally (what the feck mains plugs were so tight as to be so difficult to remove?) It 'sounds' the same as mine, so early next week, it should be available for loan again.
