Hi all,
I'm looking for a bit of incite on what's become a bit of a head scratcher for me.
For ref, the current system is Mac - naim DAC v1 - active speakers
I bought the naim DAC v1 some years ago happy in the knowlege that my turntable was to be packed away for some years to come. (Small children etc). We had a bit of a shift around in the living room and it made space for the TT out of reach of the kids. Obviously with no analogue input on the DAC I've had to find a slightly dubious workaround by connecting the phono stage to the Mac and monitoring off the line in. I imagine that would make a few people recoil in horror, but surprisingly, it doesn't actually sound too bad - though I'm clearly not getting the hit of the whole fruit!
I've thought about chopping in the naim DAC for something with an analogue input, but I can bring myself to do it - it sounds spot on the money for me.
I've thought about putting a phono stage with a digital output between the TT and the DAC. But they are few and few between, and expensive, (Unless anyone can point me to one for a couple £hundred that's good)... Not to mention the fact that it seems a bit nuts to do it this way...?
The last idea is to get a preamp with a phono stage. The problem with this is that I don't really want an extra thing between DAC and speakers. Though it has occurred to me I could just swap the connections to the speakers and effectively have a descrite digital and analog systems.
The last frustration. If I am to get another box, however it is connected up, it needs to be about the same size as the naim unit. It can be a bit wider, but not much. The rack I now use is small!
Thoughts?
Cheers,
Hamish
