Looks like a good forum this one! I mean, everyone seems to be friendly!
Blimey, why didn't we think of this kind of thing years ago!
For what it's worth, I'm 51, getting fatter by the day, my back aches, I love prog rock, listen primarily to CDs, have accumulated painful debt buying hifi I can't possibly afford, love nerdy pictures of high end turntables, have a love hate relationship with vinyl and generally muddle along as best I can.
I'm looking forward to having a good look over TAS and broadening my horizons beyond what I have learned from another forum I am a member of - The Art of Sound.
I'm currently mulling over the merits of 'hi end' interconnects which may or may not be an expensive dead end.
There is however only a slim possibility that I may be able to make a valid contribution. It will be fun trying though!

Hi Steve, Welcome to TAS, it's nice to see you here. You will be able to embed the Soundcloud player into a post if you use the button that looks like this: It'd be good to have your son's track playable right from the thread - the 'What are you playing right now' thread would be a good place for it!
Cheers Chris

Hi accudazed and welcome to TAS! It seems like you've been through the highs and lows of system building already, so come in and share your experiences. Another Zappa fan, too! We already have one of those here

Ello from another newbie here. Hi End interconnects? You'd do a heck of a lot worse than some Klotz MC5000, which is still an excellent decent cable for a wide range of systems. My fondness for NVA SSC is reported all over the shop, but I want to try a SSPmk2 sometime - four individual condutors and claiming very low capacitance. Others here have loads of fancy wires in their stereo's and claim a beneficial difference. I have little experience of modern ones, but I remember how profitable the likes of Siltech, Transparent and Chord Co used to be, the former two having distributors to take a share of the pot. Up to you though

Just because some expensive cables seem to be about profit and no performance, doesn't mean that all expensive cables are bad. Generalisations tend to come back to bite.

When did you last listen to it, Dave? TQ Ultra Black remains the second best speaker cable I've ever heard. I always report it as I hear it.

Martin, I think I'd better stick to cheaper gear, as I honestly and respectfully feel that we'll never meet in the middle on some things. Sincere apologies to the OP, as it seems as if his introductory post has been crapped on by my good self and that's not something I ever wanted to do, especially as I honestly didn't want to do my 'schoolmaster' bit as I'm told I'm prone to. To Accudazed Steve - We all need to learn, some through reading and others through doing/experiencing. PLEASE don't let me or anyone else put you off trying what you need to satisfy your audio curiosity. I've gone back to some inexpensive gear that 'does it' brilliantly for me and apologies if I ever preach about it, yet I have an old friend and former work colleague of nearly 40 years who's just splashed out on a D'Agostino amp to drive his new Martin Logan CLZ's (I think they are) and fed from his trusty old (once) £20k krell CD player/preamp. Takes all sorts

I think the point for Steve is that he has done the reading bit and he has heard about other people's experiences with expensive cables. Up to now, he has stuck with a modest pro grade interconnect and he wants to find out for himself whether an expensive one will make any difference. The components he has are extremely competent and if there is a difference to be exploited, they are quite capable of revealing it. Fair enough, I reckon.

Thanks for all the feedback - it's ALL useful!!
I'm still a bit undecided about high end cables. I suspect (but don't really know)that what differences there are may not be that great. Still, I know of an £18000 interconnect out there which must be worth a listen although in the impoverished circles I inhabit that seems highly unlikely!
Speaking of high end stuff, if any member of this forum has an Accuphase DP900 CD transport/DAC combo please let me know! I will travel anywhere in the UK to hear it...

Welcome to TAS to Steve Tell us a bit more about your fav music Well, for me, the golden era was very much from the early 60s through to about 1978. An extraordinary period of musical creativity and experimentation. I mean we've got the Beatles, the Stones, Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Doors, Rush, Steppenwolf, Bob Dylan, The Who, Johnny Cash at his peak, Yes, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Wishbone Ash, Colosseum, Elias Hulk, Deep Purple, Fairport Convention, Bruce Springsteen, Blues Creation (thanks Chris!), etc, etc, etc, etc. Sooooooooooooooooo many great bands Beyond that period I struggle a bit to be honest. There's still loads of great stuff by bands like the Police, Oasis, Stone Roses, Joy Division, Van Halen, Metallica, New Order, Seal, Wham! (er, pardon?) etc. but somehow overall, it's just not the same. There will of course be millions who disagree with the above which is fine by me and very healthy. Cheers Steve

What fine taste in music you have Steve - lots of favourites of mine there, I'm happy to play Sabbath and then put some Wham on the deck ... On the other hand Wham may have been an ironic inclusion ...
