You know the feeling - taken for a ride by some God-awful large corporate company...
I'll start - 18 months ago I left a job. My former colleagues were kind enough to do a collection, and knowing I like to attend gigs they bought me a Ticketmaster gift card. Very nice of them too. They must have been feeling flush, as I had the tidy sum of £280 on the card. Today I attempted to use the card to book some Strictly Come Dancing tickets as a Xmas present, only to find the gift card had expired. On closer inspection, in tiny words, it says that you have to use the card within a year. Yes, I feel ripped off and I didn't even pay for the damn thing!!
Any other examples?

American mobile pay-as-you-go companies are simply thieves when it comes to expiry times, often as short as six months. I've been caught out buying a phone and decent credit only to return some months later and find it had become a useless brick.

I would never ever put money on cards. I always get onto the wife about it.

On closer inspection, in tiny words, it says that you have to use the card within a year. I cashed in a Ticketmaster gift token just the other day. It was a Christmas present from my sister last year. The email sat in my inbox for months and I thought I'd use it. Selected some tickets and went to redeem them only to find that you have to validate the voucher first. Go through the process and find that the validation takes 24 hrs to take effect. I thought that the tickets might sell out while I was waiting for that to happen. When it came through it said that the voucher was good for a year from that date, so it seems as though there are different rules for different types of voucher, but if they can cope with it being more than a year for me, they ought to have been able to do so for you too. Pretty poor really.

Id be tempted to contact them and see if they will make a goodwill gesture.

Me too. Just this week I received another 100 quids worth as a present from my parents - I'll have to make sure I remember about this.

Why can't people give cash instead? I fail to understand the purpose of gift vouchers etc.

Why can't people give cash instead? I fail to understand the purpose of gift vouchers etc. It's a 'targeted' gift - it means that the giver knows the recipient well and wants them to enjoy the gift in a particular way that is perhaps mutually important to them. Or, it's a monetary gift that is not to be just sucked into the general household budget. I know someone who is not at all well off, and they prefer vouchers as it forces them to buy something nice / special for themselves as a rare treat.

I felt ripped off recently when I bought a couple of 5670 valves via a Google search .... only to find that other sellers were selling them at a third of the cost. My own fault, but I still feel peeved about it!

I feel ripped off by the aerial company who fitted me a new aerial a couple of weeks ago at an extortionate price, which is now falling down and which they say isn't covered by the warranty because it's "wind damage".
(p.s. the rather weird thing is that although the aerial's now pointing in completely the wrong direction, the TV reception isn't much different!)

You might have a legal case there. How do they know it s wind damaged? The work was not carried out properly. Try the small claims court.

Well, spoke to them the morning and it seems rules are rules and their gift cards bought in retail outlets have to be used within year. Rather strangely, although the ones you buy online from ticketmaster also expire within a year, these can sometimes be extended if large amounts (over £100) are on them, but not the retail ones. I have been told to complete a form on their website to make a complaint, so we'll see....

I particularly like the booking fee on internet orders. For doing what?

Everyone too used to being ripped off - or have too much money ? Neither. What are you going to do, go and see Pearl Jam instead of the group you want to see?

Ticketmaster fees accepted as the norm

What is more annoying is Stubhub selling 100's of tickets to sold out events within a few minutes of going on sale at ridiculous prices, then you find out Stubhub is owned by eBay !!
No wonder they won't do anything about ticket touting on eBay, ok I know for music events it's not illegal but.........

Thinking of the money made and the business model
My guess is the venue sells the tickets to Ticketmaster, or other middleman. Job done, money in the bank
Middleman puts on whatever the market will stand - ticket touts is just a phrase that might just fit
Punters cough up as no real alternative
