A question for those of you versed in the dark arts of both MM and MC cartridges …
Does an MC cart have a more potent or more defined presentation of bass than a MM, or is that entirely down to the individual cart?

It's generally said that MM do better bass than MC, MC's better mid and top end.
The carts I have pretty much bear this out.

Maybe something like a Grado Moving Iron might suit, supposed to combine the good traits of MM and MC. Never heard one myself though.

Generally I find the bass from MC carts to have deeper and tighter bass, but there are exceptions. It might be worth starting with a high output MC?

I think the bass from a good MC is more natural, but that from a MM can be more 'impressive'.
On music like technodance I'm not sure what natural means, so a MM may be the way to go if that is a priority, On classical, it's MC all the way, and across the frequency spectrum, for me.

No Ali, I mean MC, especially in definition and texture. I find most MMs a bit meh in the bass.

Hmmm... Well a HOMC cart is a possibility - a friend of mine has a Dyna 10x5 which I was very impressed by in his VPI deck. In fact he has too much bass in his system but not sure if this comes from the cart or elsewhere...

People i speak to people who always say to me that MM they heard suffer from distortion compared to the MC's they heard. Well if they do suffer this i can live with distortion beacuse i much prefer MM.

I'm not picking on Martin's comments particularly but, to paint with broad strokes, MC cartridges have significantly better subtle shading and dynamic than MM. Moving magnets have big bold strokes but you can get that as well with MC if you have high quality turntables, arms - and particularly phonostages

I'm a Dynavector fanboy. I started of with a 23RS, moved on to DV17D2 then 17D3. Then a cheap 10x5 came up on eBay -- well, you gotta try these things. The 10x5 is now my favourite Dyna! While it doesn't quite have the detail and refinement of its much more expensive brothers, it has a life and energy and sheer fun factor that makes the music really come alive. It boogies! - which is just as important to musical enjoyment with classical as with any other music, imo.

I had one of the original Ultimos (remember them, before the name change) and still have a rather rare 20A2. ...and, of course, I have that wonderful arm

In rather broad terms which I know some of you hate MM is for Rock and Progressive whilst MC is for Choral and Classical. My personal opinion of course.

My cart has to do both rock and classical!
Having heard a 10x5 I am pretty confident it can cope with this ...
