Had an "interesting" time in Currys earlier. Son wants to buy 2 in 1 netbook. Currys have device in clearance for X amount, and it's on the ticket next to machine. Sales assistant comes and starts blathering on about us buying antivirus and what have have you, when it's a Windows 8.1 (upgradeable to 10) loaded device. It already has antivirus in the form of Microsoft Defender, so the shit they're trying to sell us is unnecessary. Sales assistant told we don't want antivirus. Sales assistant goes away. Another sales assistant turns up and starts blathering on about Currys having done a special backup of the machine and it's £30 extra. At this point I point out the ticket price, and sales irritant continues with this spurious backup nonsense. I look them straight in the eye, tell them politely where to stick it, and leave.
Surely this kind of misinformation and mis-selling is illegal?

You're not going to get premium support from a Currys, I fear. They employ sales droids with little training except to do the silly hard sell of AV and after-sales warranty as you've seen. Tell them W8.1 doesn't need AV and they look at you blankly. That's why I'll buy my technology online because there is no value add in a shop.
Hi-Fi is different.

I agree with you on the HiFi front Martin. It's the same with musical instruments - I buy from bricks & mortar shops, and was on the receiving end of some excellent customer service yesterday.
On the laptop - we'll get it from Currys, but it will be bought online and collected. It might even be from the same store where they tried the old wallet raping technique.

If I don't like the salesman I've even been known to leave the shop, only to return later and pick another person to receive the commission on my sale.

I once bought 2 el-cheapo audio leads in Currys. They were in the bargain bin priced at a pound each and the bin had a dirty great "Everything in this bin 50% off" poster tacked to it. Two assistants, a calculator, and a manager later they reached the conclusion that my purchase came to £0.90. I gave up at this point and accepted their price.

Once went into one of those places on cup final day. I think it was in Hull. I could have walked out of the door with half of the store inventory before anyone noticed. I was interested in dropping about a thousand quid on a fridge and a freezer. There were well over ten employees working there that day. I hope it was an enjoyable and fulfilling game for them. I didn't wait around to see the result.

I fucking hate PCWorld as well. Dicks. I thought Currys/PCWorld had got a lot better than they used to be a few years ago - if I know what you want and go for it* they don't usually pester me with irrelevant details ! Also they used to go on for ages about extended warranties, now they ask once and then shut up. * I think that's the key - if you're not quite sure what you want there's no point asking for advice as you probably know a lot more than the salesmen..

Aaaaaaaaaaggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The bastards never fucking give up - laptop was picked up, and the antivirus software question was asked again. The reply to the negative, and pointing out that the machine was already protected by MSE or Defender brought the response "it's not as good as what we're selling".
Microsoft should fuck Currys over and make them properly train their staff - at the moment the actions of the sales staff there are both dubious and actionable. Twats!

Is Defender as good as the others?
May not be according to various sources in the net.

'Various sources on the net' are the usual ignorant half-opinions of the stupid.
Why do most corporate now use Microsoft Systems Centre Endpoint Protection? Because it comes with SCCM. What is it at its core? You guessed it, Defender/MSE.

Obviously you're much more current than me Martin, but the "at it's core" argument is no guarantee of performance. For instance, I've seen some really tasty kit cars, and at their cores were Volkswagen Beetle engines. I would not expect the same performance out of a standard VW Beetle. Nor would I trust someone who tried to sell me a Beetle on the premise that it had the same engine as, for instance, this...

Slinger - I understand, but if anything Defender is faster than most AV and gives a good level of protection. If you want more protection, I'd recommend Sophos but there is a performance cost.
Paul - don't be too sure, insurance might have been a good purchase. Our experience of Macbooks owned by students is of atrocious reliability.

The last straw was last year when i bought the wife a new laptop, the sales assistant asked me if i wanted cover on it in which i categorically said no because considering the price it aint worth it plus the it's a total load of cobblers imho. A month later on looking at my bank statement i noticed money coming out for cover on the laptop. Fuming was an understatement.
