Yes, BIG news.
The whole thing has been blown way out of proportion. "Processed meat in the same carcenogenic category as tobacco and alcohol." But failing to note that just means a proven link, nothing to do with the size of the risk posed.
I didn't mean that the WHO were sensation mongering, they have presented their conclusions well, but the BBC certainly are with their obsession with soundbites and headlines. They are not presenting the WHO findings in context or perspective unless you really dig down into the detail of some of their reporting.

Classically processed, though, and I haven't seen all the wizened old Mediterraneans fall over and croak despite eating it every day.

That's because it's low risk, you raise the risk of getting bowel cancer or similar by 18% if you eat 50g (2 rashers) a day of processed meat every day of your life ... and they ingest loads of health-giving olive oil to make up for it. They'd probably live to 150 if not for the processed meat.
