Did some vinyl trading yesterday at my favourite record shop, Clock Tower Music in Bridport, was great to get out again and look at some records. I asked for some recommendations from the owner, Roy, and this was one of them, it is a rather excellent concept album about the Apollo 8 landing written and recorded by a Bass player form Seaton, Devon. I had a listen in the shop and decided it was rather good, on listening at home I am rather pleased with it, in places a bit like weather report, also one or two famous musicians perform on the album. Michael J Bolton – earthrise Label: Market Square Records (2) – MJB001 Format: Vinyl, LP, Stereo Country: UK Released: 2018 Genre: Jazz Style: Contemporary Jazz

Another recommended album care of Roy, I completely missed this one in my youth, even though I did listen to Canned Heat of which Harvey Mandel was a member. This is a classic blues/rock album, Harvey's guitar playing on it is just stunning, he has a very distinctive style, I thoroughly recommend this one. Harvey Mandel – Cristo Redentor Label: Purple Pyramid – CLP 1791 Format: Vinyl, LP, Album, Limited Edition, Reissue, 180g Country: US Released: 2014 (original 1968) Genre: Rock Style: Blues Rock, Psychedelic Rock

I have always loved Tom Petty, I don't think he ever released a bad album, I took the plunge with this one and it is worth every penny of the £40 I paid and that many times over. It is a stunning re-release, possibly one of the quietest pressings I have, superb dynamics and wonderful mix, I wasn't ready for such a great record. Musically it has tracks that sound Dylanesque but are definitely TP, there are some lovely ballads and then there are out and out rockers with the wonderful TP style echoing back to earlier days, just wonderful. If only he was still with us, such a shame. A MUST HAVE IMHO!!! Tom Petty – Wildflowers & All The Rest Label: Warner Records – 093624929291 Format: 3 × Vinyl, LP, Album, Reissue, Remastered, Stereo Vinyl, LP, Stereo Country: UK, Europe & US Released: 16 Oct 2020

One I got the other day as part of the vinyl trade in. These Fripp and Steven Wilson re-mix re-issues are superb IMO, very good soundstage with marvellous separation and clarity, well worth considering and not expensive, the vinyl is near on silent on lead ins and quiet passages. King Crimson – Islands Label: Discipline Global Mobile – KCLP4, Panegyric – KCLP4, Inner Knot – KCLP4 Format: Vinyl, LP, Album, Reissue, Remastered, 200 Gram Country: UK Released: 2014 Genre: Rock Style: Prog Rock

Still sounds as fresh as it did when I first heard it all those years ago, this re-release is VG+, I was in two minds about getting the clear vinyl but it is very quiet on lead ins. Played this one yesterday. When I did my vinyl trading the other day this was recommended to me, I am not usually a jazz band listener but the music shop owner put on a copy so I could have a quick listen, it is quite avant-garde in terms of its composition edging towards free jazz in places but is very good overall. On the liner notes the tracks on the album it says they are actually carefully shortened versions of selected 8 parts of 15 from a 2 hour suite called 'Pastoral'. Musically it is very surprising in that it flows from one feel(feeling) to another utilising different style and aspect of all the instruments to great effect, sometimes it can be even abrasive but then musically resolves to where it goes next. I believe that Mike Westwood is well recognised in his major contribution to Jazz, even though I was not aware of him. A good buy IMO and one I would recommend to others to give it a listen The Mike Westbrook Concert Band – Celebration Label: Audio Clarity – ACL0054 Format: Vinyl, LP, Album, Reissue, Unofficial Release, 180g

Even though they were played to death in the 80's after Brothers in Arms came out they certainly knew how to turn out a tune or two, marvellous stuff. Every rock fan should have at least this compilation of theirs IMO. Dire Straits – Money For Nothing Label: Vertigo – VERH 64, Vertigo – 836 419-1 Format: Vinyl, LP, Compilation Country: UK Released: 1988

One of the most exquisite Jazz albums I know of, sublime playing, it sounds so laid back and relaxed, but that's misleading with the Bossa nova and Latin rhythms driving it along. Stan Getz / João Gilberto Featuring Antonio Carlos Jobim – Getz / Gilberto Label: Verve Records – V6-8545, Verve Records – 009 8545 Series: Jazz 33 Giri – 15 Format: Vinyl, LP, Album, Reissue, Stereo, Gatefold, 180 Gram

Another recent acquisition from the vinyl trading, one I have not listened to for years, I had forgotten how good it is, a challenging listen in parts but at the same time extremely good. It was their 2nd most successful after "In The Court of the Crimson King". It is ranked number 1 for albums in 1974 on BestEverAlbums, and there are some extremely good albums in 1974. www.besteveralbums.com/years...ir=desc&page=1The musicianship on it is quite stunning, and musically/rhythmically some challenging compositions. It's not for everyone but I would recommend a listen.
