Rubber Soul : The Beatles . Vinyl LP. Recorded June 1965-November 1965. Studio EMI London. Producer George Martin. Released 3rd December 1965. On Parlophone-Capitol. Engineers/Mixing George Martin & Norman Smith. My wife was bought this album in December 1965, in pristine condition, snaffled by me for the collection when we married. This the 6th studio album by The Beatles often said by critics to be a transitional album where they were evolving from pop to masters of the studio, the album caused others to focus more on albums than singles or EP's. On my system as it is now critics comments mean little, it is very very good, well recorded, mixed & produced, the singing well it's The Beatles, instruments including a harmonium & sitar all fit in with the piano & guitars Ringo is a better drummer than often credited, even the usual, unusual Fab Four stereo image/positioning works. I have never heard a mono Rubber Soul which some believe/say is even better.

It's contemporary jazz Martin, so might not be your thing. I've seen contemporary jazz when I used to go to the Bass Clef quite often. This is a good sounding combo and well recorded. In small doses, it's enjoyable, and I say that about most jazz. Of all jazz, I've probably seen Diana Krall the most often, but then I like her voice and love her piano playing.

A friend recommended this to me, he picked up a copy in a vintage shop. I was aware of her but had not knowingly listened to her releases, I probably did on the radio when I was young. I believe she was quite popular in the 60's, she has a rather lovely voice and interprets songs well, this compilation is a good mix of songs, some with simple accompaniment and others with band/orchestra. Well worth a listen IMHO. Julie London – The Best Of Julie Label: Liberty – SLS 2600041 Format: Vinyl, LP, Compilation, Reissue Country: UK Released: 9 Apr 1984
