Horror of horrors. No music early one morning.
Everything seems to be working. Light on, no sound
Nobody home in the Chord.
Diagnosis from Chord : It needs work.
Thanks to some quick work by Tony C I have a replacement amplifier for the few days it will take to fix the Chord.
Not so good. The original estimate of the fault by Chord over the phone proves to be wrong. I need a new power supply. This totals out at £800.
Well I went for it and Tony delivered the repaired Chord back on Saturday.
Playing Pilote, as it was in the CD player after being played earlier and I wanted to get a feel for a new, cold PSU I was rather surprised to hear it sound better than the old Chord that had been playing earlier - from cold
Glad to say I'm hearing good results from known CDs. Things I hadn't heard before.
Well it wasn't a plan but it does sound like a good upgrade

It just goes to show that even switched mode power supplies need regular servicing. Electrolytic reservoir caps lose their capacity and ripple rating, especially at high frequencies. Sorry about the cost but glad it's sounding better than ever, Mike.

Twas Bad News, Good news Did not expect a jump in sound quality
Had I thought it through I would have played a few tracks I know well on the old amp
Tony pointed out that this would of course be the latest and greatest PSU and be better than the old one from some years ago.
Even better news this is going to sound better as it runs itself in. Wolfgang Press had a few more things to say to me this morning. I assume this will continue on other albums I know well. Looking forward to that. Jan Hammer and Oh Yeah! next up for a spin

Sounding good, better than ever with known albums
Is this the new PSU, certain components or both doing this ?
Does this mean we should be contemplating all sorts of major surgery on our old kit ?
A big uplift in sound quality for 10% of the new price sounds like a bargain to me
