Hmmm - Berlin Phil voted world's best orchestra, with Rattle 2nd best conductor, according to poll of music critics ... bachtrack.com/worlds-best-orchestra-best-conductor-critics-choice-september-2015Whilst I haven't heard a broad enough range of world orchestras to have an educated opinion on a top 10, I can say for certain that the Berlin Phil wouldn't be up at the top. I've been distinctly underwhelmed by them under Rattle when seeing them at the Proms and their Sibelius cycle at the Barbican. Polished to perfection for sure, but didn't really connect with me on an emotional level. Will be interesting to see how Rattle does with the LSO and how Kirill Petrenko gets on in Berlin ...

Will be interesting to see how Rattle does with the LSO I've always rated the LSO very highly, hope it proves a good match. The LPO are probably my favourite in terms of performances I've seen over the years. Their best conductor was Tennstedt. A good word for the VPO under Jochum, too, whom I was lucky to see at the Albert Hall.
