File Explorer is a Microsoft app. I don't play any Spotify offline so I'll have a play. It sounds good streaming via Bluetooth to the car's system.

Thanks Martin - just been for a long walk and have to say the sound quality from the XBox Music media player app has exceeded my expectations, without me changing a thing. On first fire up it automatically looked for my music which is all on the SD card, indexed it and off we went. Very pleasing sound and I think my Sansa Clip+ is going to remain in the draw. With the SoundMagic E10 phones, the Lumia sound quality exceeds that of the Sansa and no volume restriction.
If Spotify works by downloading albums to listen to off-line, I'm golden. But there's a lot of stuff on the Spotify forums about it not working too well on Windows Phone, but the info is very dated. I won't be streaming anything, just playing locally. Could be the all to common case of folk moaning when it's not working, but fail to leave positive reports if and when it gets fixed? I'm a bit in the dark and don't really want to upgrade to Premium if it isn't going to work that well.

I use nMedium to remote with Jriver and find it does the job perfectly well. I don't bother with the tablet anymore as I always have the phone with me...

I'm a bit in the dark and don't really want to upgrade to Premium if it isn't going to work that well. You have to get premium to have music available offline / downloaded DRM on your phone. It also requires you to use it in online mode about once every 4 days or what was set as offline disappears and you have to download it again. Over a fast broadband connection and good wifi an album download takes seconds. There was a fairly recent release of Spotify that was terrible on windows phones. Slow, hanging, chuck you out of the app etc. That was only a few weeks ago for me but now it is much better. Back in my symbian / Nokia phone days (2009 - 2012) it was great. With every phototype we had to test I'd always get Spotify working and used it a lot on the train. We found it quite possible as a family to share one account between 3 of us, my daughters would download during the day and I would stream occasionally / load up the phone offline for a road trip etc. They now have their own account as Spotify has a student discount... Nokia always worked hard on sound quality and camera quality for the hi-end phones at least. What you really want is a phone that has proper USB out so you could go straight to DAC. i was talking to the developers way back when about that but nothing ever came of it...

My 930 has USB out, but frankly I have no need for it. I even charge wirelessly so that socket is rarely used.

When you say usb out, is that the usual for transfer of files etc or does it actually output raw music stream? The former everyone has, the latter is I thought rare or non existent. I'll have to google it:)

Thanks chaps - I'm happy with what I have now, even found a great app (ScrobbleMe) which scrobbles my plays using the xbox player. I did find nMedium but haven't tried it yet, but I'll give it a go with your recommendation Steve. First thing I did Martin was ditch the EU volume restriction on the Sansa! After a few days listening now, it certainly does seem better than the Sansa and with the fact it scrobbles and I have over 6,000 songs on there, I'm really chuffed with it as far as music on the go is concerned. I've got everything I need and nothing that I don't - I couldn't achieve all that with either an iOS or Android device

I'm thinking of WIndows 10 Continuum where the phone will become a desktop with keyboard, mouse etc. In that mode, the micro-USB is likely to become a full blown USB port.

Cortana is quite useful for reminders, such as: "set alarm, for 15 minutes" "remind me to buy some fruit when I get to Sainsbury's" "remind me to argue with Martin when I get home"

I use Spotify on my Lumia 920 and it does have issues remembering offline files, occasionally it seems to delete the offline storage from your playlist. Another option is the Mix radio player, where you can also save files offline (when connected to wifi for example).

Not had any Spotify problem's on my 640 yet, but the lack of some apps is frustrating. Recently went to the US and spent a bit of time in galleries and museums, which all had guide's you could download as apps, but only for iOs and Android, which was disappointing. A lot of the apps on Windows are cut down versions too, which is also a nuisance. The BBC iPlayer app for example does not allow you to download and play offline, likewise the iPlayer radio app. Real shame there's no official BBC news app either. I prefer the Windows Phone O/S out of the three, but its app short coming's are really disadvantaging a great phone, so much so that I've ordered a Motorola, which I didn't want to do
As I travel a lot these days a Windows phone is just not cutting it for my personal needs.

I think it'll change over time. The merging of Phone and Desktop stores is done, and universal apps are starting to appear.
I ALWAYS embarrass app providers by asking where I can find the Windows version, which usually results in some consternation and an apology. I do it with Sky all the time, who seem completely unaware of anything they do. It's the only way to stop them with the usual 'no demand' excuse.
Other vendors are much more enlightened, such as Barclays. Their Windows banking app is superb, even acting as a PinSentry for other transactions. Oh, and the number of times I've had to bring my Lumina 950 out to 'rescue' a useless iPhone which couldn't even perform satnav duties is laughable.
Give it time.

Yeah, I'm sure in time it will improve, then I can perhaps think again - but at the moment I need quite a few apps you can't get on the Windows platform. One big conflict will be my new job and I'll need to fit in with what the company uses and Windows is a no go for that. It's a shame, but I have no real choice but to switch.

?
More companies use the Windows platform than any other.
