Now that I've been powering my Pi with a battery for a reasonable amount of time (since early January), I'm just reviewing in my mind as to how I feel about the practicality of the whole thing. I bought an EC Technology 18000mAh battery supply, which has 2 USB outputs. I don't think this particular model is available any longer but it has performed well from the word go. The Pi uses so little power that I don't believe I'm getting any loss of performance from running the power pack down before it's charged back up to full capacity once again. For me, it's been a faultless and trouble-free source of power from the start and continues to be so. Even if it dies, the cost of a suitable replacement is so little as to be insignificant. I don't feel any inclination whatsoever to spend any more money on a more 'hi-fi psu'. Why would I?
Just wondering what others using battery packs have found over the longer term?

I agree wholeheartedly with that, Chris. My battery, too, has been discontinued (an XTPower MP-10000). It has a 2.0A USB socket for the RPi 2 and a 12V DC socket for the Caiman-II DAC so both are battery powered. The sound is far better than using a mains adapter with either.
In terms of practicalities, I have the battery charged overnight via a standard digital timer. I only listen on battery power and it is kept topped up every day so it never loses much charge at all.

Is the XTPower battery better than a linear PSU for the CaimanII ? How long does it last when powering a Caiman II? I can get the battery for €49 whereas a linear PSU will be close to €200

Yes. Several days (not tried longer). Make sure it's the version with 12V DC power (there are a confusing number of models).

What do people think about the DIY 18650 battery based Power Banks? I bet that is all that is inside a lot of these external battery packs.

Guys, there is an ifi power supply due out shortly, the 9V version is already out and the 5V is due in later this month, it would be very interesting if one or two of you try it out and report back your findings with the pi, I will with the mods permission send some out for listening tests as there is only the pi and touch that work off 5V dc AFAIK
The ifi is not a linear but more importantly it does not cost much which is appealing to most punters, don't ask me for details please as this is not a sale thread, I am simply suggesting a few forum members may want to try one when its out to give some feedback on performance compared to other solutions for powering the pi

Nice offer, David. Are you wanting it compared with the stock RPi power supply or against battery power?

Doubt it will beat a battery but one never knows!
