We've had some upgrades to the computer network and system at work. We need more pcs, printers, band width, video conferencing +
Assumed they knew what they were doing. Had problems yesterday so I really looked at what we had.
Nice, fast fibre Openreach broadband coming in, the white BT box. - tick
Recent addition, a Cisco firewall (I think) - tick I guess
going into
an old and I assume a rather slow 10/100 switch - oh really ?
which then goes onto a Gigabit switch and a mix of 10/100 and Gigabit switches
I assume the 'experts' throttled our broadband so have asked for any 10/100 switches to be replaced.
This could also be the cause of some of our other problems
I need to listen to myself a bit more often "Trust no one"

that reminds me of the accounts package that the last company I worked for had installed.

Try to preserve gigabit until your first main switch, to preserve network bandwidth. Is the Cisco gigabit? If not, it'll be the bottleneck. Also try to avoid more than three hops through switches maximum. Re-routing can often solve this. Feed anything serving multiple users, like Wi-Fi, with gigabit.
The rule is that the hubs should be fat while the spokes feeding a single person can be thin. Use of a database increases traffic substantially through many transactions, so watch where the server is and where the key users are.

Cisco is brand new so I assume so. I'll look to see if it is marked.
Crazy thing : The only reason we go through 2 switches is because we ran out of ports when we first moved in, with all the old kit. We will change to have the Cisco feeding a bigger Gigabit which will then feed the spokes Sound right ?

Suggested a temporary swap Cisco - Gigabit - 10/100, as the Gigabit feeds a Gigabit and PCs downstairs
Nope. IT has spoken.
Chasing for new Gigabit switches all round
