My issue with it is that running Spotify on a tablet will result in it streaming over wi-fi from the internet back to the RPi. Not ideal.
You can play Spotify music that's not on a playlist in Volumio. Just use the search.

Yes, that is my problem with it, and essentially what my reply to Tim said - I don't know how Airplay works, but if I wanted to squirt music all over the place wirelessly, I could just buy a receiver and send the signal directly to the pre-amp by Bluetooth.
Yes, I knew about the search facility but it's a bit of a trawl, I've found.

Here's Tim's reply to my last email.

Looking into the idea I've just had that Spotify Connect may be able to do just the same thing as Airfoil would do.

Back to Volumio now after failing to make Moode work satisfactorily with Spotify. Conclusion: Volumio sounds best of the 3 anyway!
Roll on Volumio 2 which is going to be adding some of the features that have made the others interesting to investigate.

I'm trying out the latest version of Rune Audio tonight: RuneAudio v0.3-beta This version is specific to the Pi 2B Unlike previous versions where the option to configure it to work with the HiFiBerry Digi+ is in one of the screen menus, here there is only an option to select between analogue or HDMI output. It took a while to find out why. You have to fiddle around a bit to get it to appear as an option in the menu. Why? Big backward step!
Here's how you do it: Once you've flash the image onto the SD card you need to navigate to the folder there.
Now you have to edit a file called 'config.txt'.
There's a stream of text there and you need to look for the section that deals with the piggy back boards. It looks something like this (vital bit in green for you to spot it more easily here): #device_tree_overlay=hifiberry-dac #device_tree_overlay=hifiberry-dacplus #device_tree_overlay=hifiberry-digi #device_tree_overlay=hifiberry-amp #device_tree_overlay=iqaudio-dac #device_tree_overlay=iqaudio-dacplus
It won't look like a list as it does here - it will be a few very long lines. Delete and replace the # symbol with a space from this bit: #device_tree_overlay=hifiberry-digi
So it looks like: #device_tree_overlay=hifiberry-dac #device_tree_overlay=hifiberry-dacplus device_tree_overlay=hifiberry-digi #device_tree_overlay=hifiberry-amp #device_tree_overlay=iqaudio-dac #device_tree_overlay=iqaudio-dacplus
Now it should work for you by giving you an extra option in the Rune screen menu. If you use a different piggy back board, you can do the same thing to the appropriate section of text.

I haven't really been able to form an opinion yet Martin. I will be listening properly tonight, I hope. I 'll be back!

I was not able to get Rune to work with my hardware, though I should have another go at some point since that was a while ago now, and perhaps whatever the issues were have been resolved. I'm pretty happy with Moode right now though - I don't use any streaming services, so Spotify support isn't an issue - but I will be interested to try Volumio 2 when it's out.

I think there are an awful lot of people waiting for Volumio 2. It's become rather a tedious wait, has it not?

Heh. I moved over to Moode some time ago now, since it offered the more stable implentation of the functionality that I want (DLNA rendering mostly) and the developer has been very happy to help me to troubleshoot and solve problems when they've arisen, and rolled out bug fixes with impressive speed. I still keep an eye on Volumio though.

You may not have seen that Tim Curtis recently joined TAS. I agree that he is very quick to respond to questions and generally very helpful indeed. If we could use Spotify with Moode without that extra stage in the process, I'm sure a few more of us would be keen users of his software because it's pretty nifty.

Horses for courses, I think. Depends on the facilities you want. For me, having a remote app is important (although the web sites approach with some make me wonder why I think this!).
My music is on a NAS although I have used a USB disk.
All I want to do is find an album or a track and play it. I don't fiddle about creating playlists.
I don't use Spotify. I occasionally use internet radio.
Volumio (1.55) suits me and that's the one I use most of the time. Rune I've never stuck with long enough - looks too much like Volumio to make it worth my while Moode I don't like because it has problems enumerating folders and I don't want to put four usb volumes on. Others I've tinkered with and gave up on.
I'm currently playing with a Chromecast Audio and Bubble UPnP ( having turned DNLA on on my NAS box) and I'm quite surprised. Ultimately I prefer the sound of my Pi2/HifiBerryDac+ which doesn't muddle the instruments up quite as much as the Chromecast, but I've been quite happy listening to the Chromecast for whole listening session and I think it sets a price and sound quality baseline which others need to better.
