Having been using and getting along fine with Volumio since the day in January that my Raspberry Pi came into this world, today I thought I'd have a fiddle about with another option, so I've spend 20 minutes or so downloading and configuring Rune Audio's version. Visually, it's actually ascloseasthis to Volumio that you might not notice, but I'll stick with it for a bit and see how I get on with it. I think one or two members have been using Rune in preference to Volumio. What are your experiences with those two and are there any others worth looking at?

I like the album artwork - this was supposedly coming to Volumio some time ago but still hasn't. I hadn't realised that Rune looks so similar.

I think the people behind them both used to work together but then split away from each other. It's got the same IP address on my router as with Volumio, so my desktop bookmark still works. I expected to have to rummage around to find a new one.

Hi Alan, Short & sweet - is that a readout of your current mental state?! Do you use Moode, or are you just confirming its existence? If you use it, what made you choose it over the others?

Learning a bit more about what Rune offers. For internet radio stations, you can add them in the front end rather than delving around behind the curtains with the black screen stuff. You just paste a URL into a list and you can select from it.......in theory! I've added a couple but can't make 'em work yet.

That's also a desirable feature. I could also wish it would display the file format and bit-rate / resolution.

Well, it seems that Alan doesn't want to offer an answer to my question, so does anyone else know anything about Moode? Will it work with Spotify, for example?

Well, it seems that Alan doesn't want to offer an answer to my question, so does anyone else know anything about Moode? Will it work with Spotify, for example? Hi, I use MoOde and can't see any Spotify option, I use MoOde with my NAS drive, and using Bubble uPNP on my Android phone I can control Tidal and Google Music, but that too doesn't have a Spotify option. If you wish to use Spotify then you can Airplay it from your iPad/iPod if you have one. I switched to MoOde from Volumio and prior to that I used piCoreplayer, main reason was that Volumio kept disappearing from the renderer menu on my Bubble uPNP app, piCoreplayer worked fine via Logitech Media Streamer software which DID include Spotify control, but because I subscribe to Tidal I switched to MoOde. Oh, OK, thanks a lot Mike. That info is really useful to me and saves me having a wasted Moode adventure. Moode seems to offer some really good features but if Spotify is out (no apples here) then it completely rules it out for me, as that's almost all I use my Pi for. (I prefer to play my CDs from the discs rather than putting them on a drive).
Maybe it will suit better further on down the line.

I had a problem last week with Rune - it wouldn't show my Spotify albums or tracks. I switched cards back to Volumio and it was functioning properly. On the return to the previous OS it also revealed a fuller bodied sound than with Rune, so there's another good reason to stick with it, along with a reminder to always check back when you make any changes.

I'm playing around with the MoOde Player just now. Struggling a bit though! The interface is showing up nicely and it's recognising all of the various files that should be available to it, but there's no sound. Keep trying!

It sounds pretty good actually, used in this way. I also like the very large list of pre-loaded radio stations (including BBC1,2,3,4 & 6), every one of which I've tried has worked, unlike the slightly variable efficacy of the ones on Volumio. I've been in contact with the developer, Tim Curtis, to ask about the Spotify thing and this was his reply:
As far as I understand it, this required getting some more (paid for) software, using Spotify on one machine and then shunting it over to the router wirelessly and then on to to the Pi. This strikes me as being several processes too many for best quality sound. Spoti-resolution is already compromised and my instinct says we should keep it simple to reduce the opportunity for messing it up.

It could be worth trying only because the Spotify interface, for instance, is much richer than the interface presented by Volumio. Must lookup Airplay.

Well, yes it does have the advantage of not having to flip back to Spotify when you want to play something that's not already on a playlist. There may be problems with Windows 10 and Airplay though?
