I have just bought a set of these after finding a cheap, clean looking pair on eBay. They get good reviews on a few forums, So I am am hoping they are as good as they say.
Anybody here use them?

The headphones arrived Friday. They are a very clean, tidy example of the 540 Reference II.
I have been listening to various tunes over the weekend, and I have to say I am impressed with them. They seem more tonally accurate/ neutral than the more modern HD650. Construction seems a bit lightweight compared to the HD650, but as these were available in the late 80's / early 90's they have stood the test of time.
My only gripe is that the cable is a bit short, and I can't find suitable connectors to make a new one. I may have to modify a set of HD650 by removing some of the plastic with a dremel, or just sit closer.
They are well worth a listen if you are in the market for a set of headphones. I would like to see how they compare to the superlux headphones, but I am not sure I really need another pair.

Not mine, but a guy on another forum who put me on to these.

Headphones seem to be as personal a choice as any other bit of hifi. Must admit I have never got on with Senns, finding them a bit grainy and bland. Many people would disagree with me about that, though.
The exception being the Sennheiser Orpheus 'stat 'phones and associated valve amp!
I heard them at a Show --- Drool! £10k, I think.

Up there with the Stax phones and energizer (at least, I remember it being as relatively expensive).

The HD540 cost me £100. Not quite the same budget, but I have to say that I don't find them grainy or harsh in any way. That could be due to my Solo Ultra Linear headphone amp working well with them.
