Does anyone else get any enjoyment from this excellent medium? As I wear strange corrective glasses, I find the audiobook a relaxing alternative to reading and almost all of it is free.

I tried to get into the Scott of the Antarctic audio book read by Ranulph Fiennes but just couldn't do it. Tended to fall asleep rather quickly!! Shame because it's excellent. A great story, very well told by someone who knows what they are talking about. Well worth looking out. Good to hear appreciation of the spoken word and I'm glad these recordings work well for you.

I've often considered them for the car but haven't tried it yet.

I used to use them all the time for the journey to/from work on the Metro. Excellent - until my wife got into Kindles and I was too mean to pay for both the ebook and the audio book, and the ebook won. There was theoretically a way to convert between formats but since we used to buy both from Amazon it would be nice if, when you buy an ebook, they let you have an audio book for free or at least cheaper. I guess its a rights issue.
I never listened in the car as I found the driving distracted me from the listening so I kept missing great chunks of the text and losing the plot!

I find them great when driving to and from work. I found the distraction thing to be true, but I now use them to re'read' books that I have previously enjoyed. That way, it's not a disaster if you miss something.

I listen extensively to audio books. Generally not free (I struggle with the quality of some of the reading). I subscribe to audible and also listen to things like Harry Potter which my sister in law bought all of, or the various books on tape (then later CD) that my dad bought when he was still working and driving 1000 miles a week.
Generally in the car, as I drive 2 hours a day.

I never listened in the car as I found the driving distracted me from the listening so I kept missing great chunks of the text and losing the plot! Good for you. Your response is good. In contrast, I found listening in the car distracted my attention from my driving being the absolute priority. In consequence, I missed exit junctions etc or got to them unsafely late. I have also had this experience with readings, news and drama on Radio 4. Not good. As a result, I try to be intelligently selective on what to listen to. Interestingly, music does not cause me to be so distracted.

I cannot remember the last time I went to bed, not in pain. Oh dear, I remember night after night of not sleeping due to the pain of neuropathy, especially in my legs (an after-effect of chemotherapy). I tried all the painkillers without success but had some relief from small doses of nortriptyline. However, too much of that dulled my thinking.
By far the best thing I've ever taken since is Vitamin B12 Methylcobalamine (not the more common Cyano-) type. This wonder vitamin has stopped my neuropathy in its tracks and I have slept like a babe ever since. If it's neuropathy you suffer from I strongly recommend it to you.

Managed to get 'Jewel in the Skull' - read by Moorcock himself [and free] If no one has heard this I recommend it very strongly, his earlier stuff was less 'clever' but far more exciting.

This source of 'free' audio books that you have; is it legal?

This source of 'free' audio books that you have; is it legal? It is on a site that says free audio books, but I don't really know the legality. I pay BT for unlimited downloads, so I guess the ball's in their court, they know what I'm doing, I've told them. Once when I was on the motorway I think I went 71 miles per hour, so I'm a bit of a villain anyway.

I am not judging you. If it's a legal source of free audiobooks, I'd like to know more. If not, I'll leave you to it.
