This thread is for introducing each other to your favourite little known works by any composers you like ...
I'm going to get the ball rolling with a gem of an early work by Rachmaninov, the 'Caprice Bohemien', Op12. It's a symphonic poem, a "fantasy on gypsy themes" and I just love the brooding and colourful atmosphere he manages to evoke in this short work, which is best served with the volume turned up loud ... It doesn't really get a look in with live performances, but you never know ...
I have a powerhouse recording of this with Svetlanov / USSR Symphony Orchestra on Melodiya - ASD3315.
Here's the Russian State Symphony Orchestra under Valeri Polyansky -

Great idea for a thread, and a terrific piece of music too. It's too late to play it too loud, but I'll definitely come back to it.

Interesting idea.
Lessee ...
Bruckner string quartet. A very early work. No, not the more famous and imo inferior quintet. Quite a few recordings now, mostly not up to much imo. But the Naxos recording of it is excellent. I discovered the work on an old Onyx LP with the Keller quartet. Gently melancholic and sad. Very tuneful. I love it!

Dvorak - well known for several of his symphonies, concertos and chamber works - but I suspect that his choral pieces are often overlooked. Try the Requiem and Stabat Mater - very beautiful music.

Yes, the Requiem is a fabulous work!
Will check out the Bruckner when back from hols...

Poulenc's Stabat Mater. A little known work of his, but utterly mesmerising in his highly recognisable style. A simply wonderful piece that you won't regret trying out. This is my favourite performance:

Yes, all too recognisable. You are quite wrong, though - I regret it deeply! As a general rule, I can't stand Poulenc's music.

I'm with Mr T on this one - that's a great work and recording IMO...

Back from hols now and catching up on some music …
Just been enjoying the Bruckner String Quartet that Jerry recommended - found a live HD performance here on YouTube. The performance isn’t totally consistent with some intonation issues but there is much to enjoy. As Jerry said, it is melancholic but most tuneful at the same time … I will keep an eye out for this in future concerts but it is rarely performed.

Ha ha! - I think you'll have to wait a long time for a concert performance! Just get the Naxos CD, it's excellent.
