A question for all users for expensive headphones. Why, when there are so many good speakers made, do you like them? Should be some interesting answers.

Because I can listen to music without waking up my 8 week old daughter. I can't carry speakers on an aircraft etc.

Because they get around the room/speaker interface problem, and because I can listen as late and as loud as I like without bothering the neighbours/rest of the household.

Very valid point and one I've always wondered, yet I always knew the answer as has already been given above . I have to confess I have never used good headphones and I can only wonder what they are like. The convenience factor must be huge. And I wonder how they compare to a large pair of floor standers.

I don't own a pair any more but I did used to keep a pair of Grado SR-325 handy which were really good for digging into the mix and peeling back the layers of a recording. I only used them for that specific purpose - when I wanted to 'get forensic'!

They lose out on the furniture aspect of speakers don't they?

Much prefer listening through speakers but I'm so aware of how thin the walls are with my neighbour, so I very rarely get the opportunity to listen to music loudly through them!

Foam tiles are a very cheap way of deadening transmission of sound through brick.

I work shifts, mostly unsociable hours. I love sitting for a couple of hours listening to the cans. Its immersive and lets me get my music fix without disturbing my family. The quality of sound available for affordable outlay is staggering.

Besides I can get better SQ for a lot less

If you attach batons and then plasterboard over them, your decor will not be adversely effected. A fellow audiophile in the next street from me did this and reported great success. He was a big Mahler fan and he liked the sound pressure levels to be quite fierce.

I think this subject has served it's purpose. It seems that headphones aren't actually the mode of choice, but rather used for the benefit of others.

Try to get a demo of high end cans suitably amplified. Listen to music you know really well-make your own mind up. Room acoustics make a big impact.
Audio books!!!
