Hi I've recently purchased two sets of minimax 2's the later versions. One is identical to Martin T's as in his photo, the other a set in black ash. I have been buying and selling speakers of all sorts, although none more expensive than around £100. I have to say that to date nothing has impressed me more than the Minimax2 !! I use them with a Marantz KI Pearl lite, I have a converted garage space that I created, it is well insulated and is lined with ship lap timber, so it's a bit log cabin like, except it's painted! It's a great space for listening, and not much sound leaks out, so you can listen fairly loud without annoying the neighbours. The minimax' s are in pretty good shape the Teak ones have been re foamed, although this is now a harder rubber, so I imagine it has changed the sound slightly, the cones are definitely tighter than the Black cabs are. They sound great independently, but played together with the black ones on the floor and the Teaks on stands they sound fab!! I cannot get over how good In fact, from jazz funk to Beethoven they are simply so engaging and musical and there is plenty of bass! They seem to create a much more natural sound conveying the emotion of the performance somehow! Obviously I am careful with the volume, but anyone who hasn't heard these beauties is in for a real treat. My tip, or at least my preference is to turn the mid right down ( my amp has a mid control ) and the depth and soundstage is better and as I'm playing all digital recordings, Apple Music is great if you haven't tried it, far better than spotify, this takes away the harshness often present with digital music. I use a tiny gizmo that plugs into the USB and acts as the sound card of my Mac ( cost a tenner and improves the timing and quality, then the digital optical signal is converted by a CYP DAC (£40 )this performs better than my other DAC in my Louge amp Marantz Pm6005, which I actually don't rate ( the DAC bit ) so I use an analogue lead from the apple express in that set up. ( sorry I'm an Apple fan, there are lots of us you know! ) anyhow I've gone on a bit but I just had to agree with all the minimax fans, who needs the LS3/5a, love Kef, but I'd happily have paid ten times the price for my minimax's and nobody is getting there hands on them any time soon, don't you just love EBay!!!
