So, having recently upgraded a few bits on one of my turntables, I thought perhaps I should actually take a more considered approach to setting it up optimally. There seem to be a number of 'Test LPs' that are marketed with this in mind (a few listed here). Does anyone use one of these? Are they to be recommended? Or something I can do without? Thanks!

I still have the Hi-Fi News HFS69 test record, which is great for setting up and performing tracking tests. I've no idea if it's still available.

I think it was superseded by HFS 75 which I still have. (purchased 1974). They have a new one that's been around about 10 yrs now. Actually you don't need one and I hardly have used mine preferring to do final adjustment by ear.

I borrowed a HFN record and in order to pass the harder tracking tests needed to dial in a lot of anti-skate, which made piano music sound very odd. I wouldn't bother and would just set the tracking weight based on the cartridge manufacturer's recommendation and then use your ears to fine tune.

Thanks chaps! I decided to spend the cash on some little spirit levels and a digital scale, for setting VTA and tracking force respectively. Turns out the antiskate is easier than I thought to set by ear, using headphones and a mono LP.

I have always tested my LP set up with one LP, of music!? If you know it really well and it was well recorded, it works as well as any sonic signals; maybe more so. So I use :- The Alan Parson's Project - Vulture Culture
