Callously murdered by a grinning blood lust imbecile who paid US$35,000.00c for Cecil's innocent and magnificient life to add to his other so called trophies of slaughtered animals. Surely no right minded human can consider this sport?!
I make no apologies for this post and it is up to the moderators whether it remains but my two loves in life, apart from life itself and my family, is the love of music and the love of animals... what is it with a country's mind set that to kill for the sake of killing is okay. Wish animals had the right to bare arms and shoot back!
I am angry and I weep

These Americans think that they can go and kill everything and everyone anywhere in the world. It is a disgrace. I hope he suffers total financial collapse of his business so that he can never afford to go hunting again.

It's not just Americans, Stan. Anyone with enough money in their pocket can do it, though, admittedly people from the US far outnumber those from other countries. Equally as bad are the governments that allow it to happen in order to bring currency into their economy. In May of this year, the Namibian government took $350,000 from a hunter in exchange for a licence to shoot a Black rhinoceros. A Black rhino, for heavens sake.

An ex head of the BBC hunted lions. Loads of folk have done it. I'd have no problem with it if guns weren't involved. I do realise this one was killed with a crossbow but the guy with the crossbow was backed up by men with guns. Just to get this straight as well I don't even find this deplorable or the like I just think he's a really sad little man.

Just try Googling 'africa big five' and you will see how common this is. Here's a price list from a random site.
BIG FIVE $ (USD) Lion Male $25,000 Lion Female $8,000 White Lion Male $30,000 Elephant $40,000 Cape Buffalo $15,000 White Rhino POR Leopard POR
PLUS DAILY RATES : $ (USD) Big Game Hunt: $650 per hunter per day Observer: $250 per observer per day
The US is considering banning the importation of such trophies. It, the UK and others are signed up to CITES - the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora controls: import and export of protected species. This provides a mechanism for importing trophies into the country. The trouble is, it would still go on if trophy imports were banned, it's just that the trophy would be a photo or video.
There is an estimated African lion population of 35,000 and many, many lions are killed as a result of man's activity - mainly from livestock protection but if that wasn't bad enough CITES issues about 650-680 movement licences a year for lion trophies (as opposed to live animals). This dentist isn't alone, not by a long chalk.

if there is any justice in the world , some mad american with a gun (or crossbow ) will shoot the dentist!! hopefully !!! It could happen Krell, in a country where gun ownership is beyond liberal idiotic lunacy and any high school kid with a 'lets kill'em agenda' can own and use one on other high school kids to deadly end results, we've seen it many times. Even the American President thinks the gun laws needs long overdue over haul but is banging his head on a Republican brick wall. I sometimes wonder if these so called huntsmen and women will ever hunt one another to a final end game, I mean the blood lust, must at sometime or other, step up to a new depraved level of 'lets go hunt and kill humans for sport'!?
In fairness to Americans not all have this so called huntsman blood lust and have openly condemned what has happened... I applaud this. Also, the Americans are not alone, some Brits and others seem to enjoy killing as well.

Taken to a different level by that woman, who I think is American. One of her many trophies was killing a giraffe A leaf eating giraffe for god's sake ! She poses with the dead bodies with a self satisfied smile
How about we drop these clever bastards into the Islamic state territory and see how they get on there.

If Mr Dentist fancies a bit of sport, I'd happily go in a cage with him. No rules. Now that would test his survival instincts.

No problem. $2,950 to you. And would Sir care for an ostrich on the side? Only $950 Or perhaps a zebra for a piffling $1,550?

Let him out at night in the area he killed the lion, but without weapons. We'll see how long he survives when he is merely supper on two legs.

Not a concept I can grasp Hmm, maybe an animal killer or two.

I think most people must agree that this was wrong but we probably all have a different threshold for conditions where it is acceptable (though regrettable) to kill an animal. I suspect you would be a long way over to one end of the scale, Mike.

If they want the excitement of the kill why not make it more interesting to have someone hunting them at the same time
or back to my other alternative
drop them into somewhere with loads of baddies (except they would likely kill innocent bystanders)

I am no animal lover, but you don't need to be one to see that this was wrong on so many levels. "Sad little man" indeed, if he needed this to get his adrenalin rush. Hope his business is ruined and he has to go into hiding.
