Hmmm, probably about 45 years, I started after hearing a relative's Philips all in 1 system that impressed me hugely. Being very young - 14 or 15, I think - and with limited funds I managed to scrape up enough ££ for a cheaper version of the same thing and I loved it.
My relative's kit was very much like this ...
Mine was rather less sophisticated!
The particular LP that left me drooling will always be an important part of my collection ...
I think I am on my 3rd or 4th copy.

I think Koss K6 headphones and an Amstrad top-load cassette deck were my first purchases at 14 - so 40 years

Interesting that you know the number of years of box swapping Andrew. Was there an event that triggered it?
(Does this sound like an AA meeting?!)

Shortly after that, I moved to York, still working in a Hifi shop but now also living just yards away from The Sound Organisation. That was enough to cement my love of Hifi forever. I was just in there last Saturday but it feels like a different world now. Most of the Linn stuff was completely alien to me. Still, two of the same staff remain from 1986 though, which I think is wonderful. It's clear that they love what they do.

My first system was a Sashio cassette Walkman and plug in speakers, I placed it on my book shelf, closed my curtains and blare out Cliff Richard. But as for being a proper HIFI nutt, I would say maybe 15 years or so.

Sometimes it feels like that when you get rid of something that has never been anything other than reliable and enjoyable. I let my Minstrels go to a good home the other day and my Elas went the same way a few weeks ago. Somehow it just feels like abandoning them. Daft, I know but that's how it feels.

Does an Arcam Alpha 2 / Dual CS 505-3 / Philips CD (probably a 610) / Celestion DL4 Series 2 setup count? If so then about 25 years. If not then 2 or 3.
p.s. I've still got an Arcam8/8p combo too Chris, and mine is still in regular use.

I reckon the moment you decided that your radio alarm clock/dansette/portable mono cassette player (delete where applicable) wasn't good enough, then you were well and truly 'at it'. In my case, I realised that the Van der Molen turntable with built in amp (or crackle generator, as I fondly remember it as) that I shared with my sisters just wasn't doing it for me it. (not my photo)What I replaced it (SP25 / Sony amp and Wharfdales) with was not that much better, but I was on the road!
