So the Berlin Phil now have a new chief conductor - Kirill Petrenko. www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-33226283He's only 43 and hopefully hanging out at the Bavarian State Opera won't have traumatised him too much ... I must say that I went away from all the recent Berlin Phil / Rattle concerts I went to feeling a bit short-changed. I don't know quite how they deserve such a lofty reputation; maybe they have a very good PR machine. Personally I don't think they can afford to be complacent and whilst it won't be an easy job, I'd like to see Petrenko shake things up a bit there if he's allowed to ...

Perhaps the BPO are just too smooth for Rattle, I haven't liked any of their recordings together. On the other hand, Rattle with the CBSO were exciting to listen to.

I had the opportunity to see and hear Petrenko conduct the BPO two or three years ago around Christmas .... he conducted the Poeme d'Extase by Scriabin ... that was a hair-raising experience. We all left thinking that Petrenko was quite a dynamic conductor. I hope he brings new life to the orchestra!

Well that sounds promising!
Ah - the immortal Poem of Ecstasy! An absolute favourite of mine, it's a mind-bending work in its own right - I've been lucky enough to hear it live as well. It isn't performed live nerly as much as it deserves. Sitting near the stage we were totally immersed in the hypnotic sound ... Do you have the Zubin Mehta / Decca vinyl? It's very, very good ...

Sadly I don´t but I´ll be looking for it now!
