Good to hear songwriters will get compensation. Not sure how this will be managed

There used to be a levy on blank tapes which was intended to recompense people for owners of music making copies. The issue can't be as black and white as 'You may not make a copy for your own use'.

I have nothing against compensating performers, they deserve to be paid for the performance of their music.
However, legislating for the unenforceable is just stupidity. If I buy a CD and make a copy of it for the car, I can't be in two places at once, listening to them both. Where exactly is the offence? It's just a format conversion! I dislike the law being an ass.

Yes I have similar concerns around files. I just do not see how you can enforce this

I agree! I've been copying music since the 70s, recording vinyl to tape to play in the car etc. With the decline in support for older replay technologies (although vinyl has made somewhat of a comeback), machines for playing older formats are dwindling in number, 2nd hand machines are a finite resource with parts for many no longer available, and manufacturers of any new machines seem to think the sky is the limit as far as pricing goes. In short, they are becoming less well supported as time passes. Hell, looks like CDs will only be good for use as drink coasters in future.
What? Will I have to repurchase all my music in digital format to be legal? I don't think so!
