Some of you will know that I've had a Microsoft Surface 2 tablet for a while now and have loved it as my go-to tool whether at work or travelling (or just commanding Volumio for music streaming). It has been perfect for both work and leisure but unfortunately it runs Windows 8.1RT which is doomed to never be upgradeable. It has some other failings too, such as not running 8.1 Pro which means it cannot be added to the network domain at work, it cannot have standard Windows applications installed etc. None of them were showstoppers but I've been keeping my eye on the Surface Pro series as an upgrade.
Well, a couple of days ago I thought "why not go for the Surface 3 which has an Atom processor and therefore runs standard Windows"? I've played with the Surface Pro 3 but it's a little large to be wieldy enough to go anywhere. The Surface 3 is just perfect, especially with its new aspect ratio of 4:3. So I ordered a Surface 3 4GB RAM / 128GB storage with dock, keyboard, pen and slip case, and it arrived a day later. I'm very impressed with this beasty. Performance is excellent, display quality is stunning and so is the battery life. The pen makes precision work easy, too. It came with Windows 8.1 so I had to jump through a couple of hoops to transform it into W8.1 Pro but that's done now so I can join it to the domain on Monday. It will also upgrade to W10 Pro, of course. Office 365 installed without incident.
If anyone is looking for a full scale Windows tablet that can run any Windows application and is extremely productive, the Surface 3 is well worth a look. It's beautifully built, too, using Microsoft's magnesium VaporMg casework. Don't buy an iPad Air without taking a look at one of these first!
