Interesting read, but some of it not necessarily what I'd call 'affordable' !
($4800 per 2.5m cable ?)

Yes, but it is The Absolute Sound. You should see their high end guides!

I thought the Oppo BDP-105 looks like a hell of a universal player for the price.

Read the Elac B5 speaker review. Having heard them, they are the bargain of the decade.

I don't know, Chris, I haven't heard them. They are certainly worth getting a listen to, though. If they do what the B5 does with some more bass power then they are looking like another complete bargain.

Think they'd be a significant step up from my AN Ks? The B5s I mean.

I really couldn't tell you. Is there a dealer up your way (not on the rig, I mean)?!

No. Thinking Amazon on 14 day trial but I'd have to sell the ANs first to justify them.

Go for it, you'll never know otherwise!

I'd tread very carefully, Chris. Your amplification is valve. Your AN-Ks are sealed box, so mechanically self damped.
The Elac speakers are very, very good indeed, but they're bass reflex speakers, and require an amplifier with decent current delivery and a high electrical damping factor to counteract the effects of back EMF. You might be losing as much as you gain, and the liklihood is you'll want what you had back.

Good point, Chris (Strat). I meant to suggest go for the trial, not sell the ANs first. That way you have a fall-back position.
The B5s have a sensitivity of 85dB so they're not that efficient, I dare say the B6 may be 1-2dB better. That's worth thinking about, too.

The 85dB/Watt/Metre is of less importance than the reactive load of the speakers. A valve amp can get on OK with fairly inefficient speakers. The issues occurs when the reactive load of the speaker demands too much current from the driving amplifier. A load that has 85dB efficiency that is fairly benign should be OK. A load that has 85dB efficiency that requires current delivery is a different kettle of fish altogether.
The point I'm trying to raise is that quoted efficiency alone is not the only factor to consider. There's a lot more to consider than just that.

Chris doesn't just use valve amp though, he has a very capable 100 wpc transistor amp too.

The point I'm trying to raise is that quoted efficiency alone is not the only factor to consider. There's a lot more to consider than just that. Yes I agree, and it's not particularly predictable. I used the efficiency rating as an indicator only that a low power or SE valve amp would struggle to get decent dynamic range. Ultimately, you must listen to the combination as lack of control (especially in the bass) will work reasonably well in a benign room but sound horrible in an adverse one.

I spent a good hour and a half, maybe two hours in front of some AN Ks yesterday, and that says something. The system they were in was well matched, and I literally had to drag myself away. The AN Ks are good.
