Love the 252s and very fond also of 352 and 852. My very first great sounding system was played through a pair of 252s.. When I gave up hifi altogether, it was a pair of 352s in Cash Converters that got me started again.

All three of those models were Marshall designs for MA

I didn't know that, Andr'e. It makes perfect sense though, as they do have a certain coherence that I also appreciated in the ES14s. I could happily live with any of those designs. My 252s were in the largest and sonically best room I've ever had: A large open plan apartment in a Georgian house in York. It's still one of the best sounds I have had, despite it being a humble system in comparison to things I've had since. 252s can be really communicative and yet they are pretty much overlooked these days. Not by me and I'm glad to see not by others too

Ive always loved the original Castle Acoustics designs of the 70's/80's but always had a strong liking for the original Heybrook 'HB-1' amazing sound quality for the small outlay at the time. If you can live with the buget build quality as you can with those '252' you'll not go too far wrong.

Interesting conversation. I'd read about the 252s before buying them and had noticed that quite. Few folk were very fond of them. I can see why. For me they're cracking as they work well in a small room in corners. As an aside there's a pair of HB1s needing refoamed on Gumtree the now for £30.

I've been through a lot of speakers over the last five years and the only ones which have stayed the course are my MA 852's and a pair of B&W DM2's, neither of which will be leaving any time soon

Great buy Chris. The Heybrooks are very very bright. You made the better choice there.

I had some R252's when they came out... they were so bright I had to put some fabric over the tweeters! I believe they later modded them to tame the treble rather but didn't call them a MkII or anything....

Great buy Chris. The Heybrooks are very very bright. You made the better choice there. Yep, in all my years of box-swapping, the Heybrook HB1 is to only speaker that has made me wince. It's not only the brightness, it's a penetrating hardness on certain vocals. Very detailed but Lerner with extreme care and even then, they might be too much for you.

HB2 was nice and ironically smaller, I'd friends with both at one time.

I thought the original 'HB-1' were a perfect partner to my A&R Cambridge 'A60' amp. Dunno about the over brighness, i never noticed this.
