Caravan, if you didn't know are one of the best bands in the world ever.
Just got In the land of Grey and Pink, 3 disc set, one version remastered by Mr.S.Wlison esq - and he makes exceedingly fine er, remixes.
Except the remix is on the 3rd dicsc, a DVD !
My DVD player is a Toshiba I got cheap for £30 odd and not quite as good as my Isis CD
What is the best way to RIP that remaster and then stick it on CD ?

I got annoyed with the King Crimson 40th Anny CD/DVD sets. Bonuses are on the DVD's Why do they assume people have high quality DVD players installed in their Hi-Fi systems?

Do these assuming poor quality DVD players make an aweful noise out of the DVDs supplied?
I have had Grey and Pink for eons and find nothing wrong with boring, unexciting standard CD. Biased?

I have both King Crimson's Lizard and Islands in normal CD and Mr Wilson's remix The remixes are very good. Must compare them with my original LPs

If you have a DAC, try connecting your Blu-ray or DVD player to it via optical or co-ax. My Pioneer LX-55 is connected to the Caiman-II that way. The SQ from those bonus discs is often pretty good.
Make sure you set the player's output to 2-channel PCM, not Dolby.

No DAC at home You surprise me that a cheap DVD player can get anywhere near a good CD even with one of Stan's finest in play

If the DVD is a standard one (DVD-Video) then you should be able to play it on any DVD player. If it's DVD-Audio then you will need a specialised player. With regard to ripping the DVD material, it depends on how the DVD is configured. If it's standard LPCM (ie DVD-Video) then you need to use something like DVD Audio Extractor to extract the files first. If it's DVD-Audio (MLP) then DVD Audio Extractor will also see that and you can extract the files. You could also use Foobar with the appropriate installed too if the files are DVD-A (MLP). Once you've got the extracted files you'll need to resample them and dither them down to 16 bit (the files are likely to be 24/96000, whereas CD is 16/44100), and after that you can burn an audio CD that your CD player can read. It's easier to do than it sounds, but it's a steep learning curve if you've not played with this kind of thing before. You could just ask somebody familiar with all the procedures to do it for you if it all seems a bit too daunting

You surprise me that a cheap DVD player can get anywhere near a good CD even with one of Stan's finest in play I didn't say that exactly. 'Pretty good' covers most of the video offerings. A DVD-A can do even better, but your player needs to be compatible.

If you rip just the audio and downsample it, you can fit about 70 minutes onto a CD.

I've had a look around on t'interweb, and managed to find out the details of the Caravan DVD bonus disc. It's a DVD-Video disc, so it will require a ripper such as the one I linked to earlier, and it's fully featured and free to use for a 30 day trial period. There are also tutorials on how to do various bits and bobs www.dvdae.com/dvdae/tutorial/wavOn the other hand you could press yer bog standard DVD player into playing duties, although you'll need a screen of some sort to enable you to navigate the disc to find the stereo mixes. The DVD player on its own will do, but you could shove the SPDIF output through an external DAC and it could sound very respectable indeed.
