Regarding a lot of long running Rock bands i think a Rest is best being for good!
A lot of music i listern to is from bands that have been running over 40 years now. During that period there has been quite a number of style changes within their music career. I find it near on impossible to adapt to these changes over the years, every step is a step further away from the original sound i fell in love many years ago. . Im a good one for sectioning off my fav bands work into a certain era's {Easy being only around 5 years max}. I cope with it better if i can work to a dividing line or two.. Fans that say to me they like everything thur fav band has brought out i truly question!
It's easy really a band forms they adopt a music style that fits in with the time/fashion. then a few years down the line enters the new trends in music, the band then quickly adopt a new musical direction & on & on. The original style is obviously changed first time around, the style you loved them for near on gone. The new style you don't like hence in your eyes the bands is as good as finished. You maybe lucky you might just like the new style, but that will only last for a short period until the next phase comes into play.

A good example for me is Genesis. Their first two phases (Gabriel and then post-Gabriel up to Wind and Wuthering) were great, the band since then have produced little of interest to me and have steered ever further from their roots.

Steely Dan. Changed but managed to still let me respect/enjoy their work, perhaps the more so for the changes.

1st Phase: From Genesis To Revelation, simple pre prog no inhouse sound to speak of yet. 2nd Phase: 'Trespass', 'Nursery', 'Foxtrot'.Then quickly progressing but in a simular vein: 'Selling England'/'Lambs' 3rd Phase: 'Trick' +'W & Wuthering'
Im out then.
Pretty much the same with YES 1st Phase: 'Yes' & 'Time & A Word' 2nd Phase: 'The Yes Album' & 'Fragile' & as with Genesis comes the Wizzardry 'CTTE', 'Topographics' & 'Relayer' 3rd Phase: 'Going For The One' & 'Tormato'
Im out

With Yes there have been a few bright glints, such as Shoot High Aim Low, Owner of a Lonely Heart, Machine Messiah etc.
With Genesis there has been nothing.
