My staple diet is obscure early British Prog..
But for the more mainstream bands, i generally listern to the below a lot, The thing is i generally have a cut off point at 1973 but with the below artists i can listern to their material up to the back end of the 70's. with exception to Crimson which were obviously defunct for around half a decade by the mid 70's..
Emerson, Lake & Palmer King Crimson Yes Genesis Van Der Graaf Generator

My all time fave bands are Courage of Lassie and Yello. Very different styles but they satisfy different sides of me. many people who have gone on to hear Courage of lassie have bought the albums and love them dearly. My brother described them as "hauntingly beautiful" which I quite liked.
Their 3 main albums are:
The temptation to exist Sing Or Die This Side Of Heaven.
they matured and got better as they went along but everything they ever recorded was gold dust as far as I'm concerned. Sound quality is fab on both vinyl and CD but it's the music that matters. Here's a taster of what they are about:
Great thread BTW

Courage of Lassie and Yello LOL - I have both, but you couldn't have given two more disparate examples. Actually, the fact that I have them I think proves your point?!

Led Zep Black Sabbath Rush And more recently, Midlake... My kind of music. led Zep Pink Floyd early Sabbath The Doors then, Prefab Sprout. The first "less mainstream" band I ever liked. Dire Straits, obviously. These stay with me on an almost weekly basis. The rest of my listening choices vary with mood and whim.
