I can't remember the model number but it was a Marantz. It had a narrow front profile, was front loading, and the shape was similar to the latest Rega amps and DACS. I bought it in the early 80s. I don't remember what sound quality was like but I do know I liked the fact that there was no noise ala vinyl.

Auditioned loads when CD began, but the only one I liked was too expensive (an early Meridian player). Finally bought an Arcam Alpha in about 1993, followed by an Exposure CDP in 1998. I eventually bought a (secondhand) Meridian player in 2005.

I started with an Arcam Alpha in the early nineties, moved onto a Marantz CD 6000 Kis and ended with a heavily modified Naim CD3. That broke recently and now stream through an RPi2 which is a totally superior sound option. Will not go back to CDP's. All my CD's are ripped in JRiver and loaded onto my ancillary hard drive and now contained within a couple of big memory sticks which I can plug into my RPi2. Sound presentation exceeds normal CDP playback. No point in exploring out of date technology which produces a sub standard sound.
Moving on............

within a couple of big memory sticks which I can plug into my RPi2 Greg, have you tried streaming the files over ethernet (cable, not wi-fi) for comparison? You might find a little further improvement in SQ over using the RPi's USB interface.

My first player was a Pioneer PD-S703. I still use it today. I did buy an Arcam Alpha 7SE a few years later when the Pioneer started to play up. However, a bit of a clean fixed the Pioneer, and the Arcam is gathering dust.

Mine was a Marantz CD65IISE which I bought from a family friend in around 1990 with my pocket money. It wasn't that well made but I loved it

Sony CDP-XB930 QS. I was vinyl only until lateish 90's. Solid build, regret selling it really to get Rega Planet (although that was good a'nall).

Sound presentation exceeds normal CDP playback. How's it do that then? Sorry, my original post was lacking in detail. When I claim better sound quality I was specifically referring to streamed music which I currently access through Qobuz and Deezer servers. That doesn't alter the fact that my ripped CD recordings seem to sound better when played from my PC rather than direct from disc through a CDP. I have no explaination and don't have the understanding. This is simply my observation.

At present, streaming stored music files over Ethernet is not practical, so I am utilising home plugs to facilitate. I know this is not ideal but when sat and listening, I have nothing to complain about. It sounds better compared to my previous CDP source and possibly my nice vinyl source. It really is an eye opener! If I stick with it, I can see loads of kit being removed from the living room, not to mention removing the CD's and even the LP's! If so, the wife will be ecstatic, albeit, as ever, the enthusiasm will only last the usual five minutes

I was fortunate to work in the repair department of a company that sold CD players, and enjoyed the privilege of being able to take home and try out players for various reasons. This lasted for several years. I did eventually sort of make my own CDP out of bits and pieces of the Philips range. Philips had at one stage a set of boards and interfaces that they slotted together to make the CD150/250/350 range. Some features were available on one type, but not on the other. So I ended up knocking together my own custom version from the bits we kept in stock as spares. The one option I liked was from the CD250 or CD350, which could memorize the track numbers of the discs that the played frequently. It would then only play those tracks by default and skip the rest. Another option was track name and time. But somehow these features came and went in next to no time, never to be seen again on any of their other players as far as I know.

I had a CD650, Stan, with that very feature. I don't recall using it much but it would be useful for some of my CDs. Functionally, it was a great improvement over the CD104B, but build quality was nowhere near as good.

I THINK mine was a Technics 580a. It was a good player.
No idea what happened to it.

I forgot the UK tuned differences are, it was quite a bit more expensive than the standard unit.. one change is the Headphone amplifier is not on the UK spec machine. Ive replaced the original captive lead with a new high quality one & new cable gland..also replaced the feet for simular but solid aluminium feet. I swapped out my old Arcam 'CD72' for it .. Heres a UK tuned jobbie: archiwum.allegro.pl/oferta/-sony-cdp-xb930e-uk-special-edition-rarytas-i3302407601.html
