your just mentioning detachable headshells to annoy me Haha until recentlyI would've been right there with you denouncing them because it just seems like snapping someone's arm in half and expecting it to work just as well. The thing is, I had the Sony alongside my Xerxes with Xenon MCs (single piece titanium arm tube). the two decks were pretty much identical sonically. I found this odd, as I often have two decks together and they have always differed significantly. Of course, the Sony may be even better with a fixed headshell, but it has made me wonder if it's as important sonically as my intuition would suggest. These days I seem to "know" less and less.

'Lo Folks, jumping back in here after a two day break from the PC, does yah good you know. Two whole days of slobbing out and listening and listening to vinyl whilst the wife was away at her mum's (elderly lady now) is very rejuvenating. Must get the kitchen cleaned up before she gets back !
First off, thanks to everyone who has provided info and advice/help in this thread, much appreciated and all that. Some intriguing suggestions here and it just goes to show that we all don't vote alike (even in general elections), would be absolutely boring if we did! I've only ever had Linn, Koetsu and AT cartridges in my long standing system (classic Naim, modified etc); early days in HiFi, long before some of your parents got in bed with one another to have you, I started with the usual Dual and Rega route using MM's of the day, P77 IIRC . I still use a Goldring MM GX1012 on a LP12 in my cubbyhole home office and it is very enjoyable within that context.
A lot of todays top of the pile and so called super MCs do cost mucho moneee and some of this can be put down to the engineering + R&D that goes into their makeup, but looking at some, I have vDH (Van den Hul) in mind here with cheapo stick on brand labels do make me wonder if the enthusiastic vinylist is having his/her pocket picked. If I upset any vDH users what can I say but sorry.
*MartinT, do tell me more about the Shelter 901's character but it may not be suitable for my Ekos which does not readily accommodate long bodied cartridges having a shorter head shell construction geared towards Linn's own pickups? *DanoQ, your PT intrigues me, howz about telling all in a separate thread? Might make old Pinko unsettled for awhile, so be gentle and caring?
PS What state do you lot leave the kitchen in when you're on your own or do you rely on takeaways or a pint'n'burger at the pub?

The Shelters have a family sound which is dynamic with a potent foundation, liquid midrange and no obvious weaknesses throughout the frequency range. The 901 was the top model in the previous range and sounds very fine indeed. The 501 was not quite there and had some harshness when pushed in the midrange (mine may have been a very worn example). The 5000 takes the 901's strengths and adds very fast edge detail and transient attack. DQ may "be a while" in responding to you. My kitchen varies, I try to keep it tidy but a couple of late returns from work can see it descend into messiness as I'm too tired to put things away
