Personally I think there should be a rounded musical education for all youngsters that goes beyond learning the recorder ... Developing an understanding of classical music would be part of that, as would other great genres of music such as jazz ...
Of course it's all in the way it's taught at the end of the day as to whether kids will engage with it!
