I enjoy iced coffee (and tea) during what passes for summer; has anyone here tried any of the "cold brewing" devices available? *BUMP*

Not personally tried any of the cold brewing devices Slinger, but have drunk the product and it's a totally new drink altogether, absolutely gorgeous. Very smooth and bursting with flavour. When I was in China I used to frequent a coffee roasters in Hong Kong who would put the average audiophile to shame, these were hard core coffee nerds, but boy did they brew good coffee, a slow cold brew being one of them. They used to fuss over each coffee they produced and were always measuring, testing, tasting and discussing their concoctions - part of the pleasure of going there was just watching them behind the counter, it was quite a show! This is them and should you ever find yourself in Honkers, thoroughly recommended 18 Grams Specialty CoffeeSomething I intend investigating once I settle, but I'm looking at boxes again and thinking about the next move

What are your top bean recommendations for an Aeropress novice? Either online, or the following supermarkets - Sainsbury (12 mile round trip), Tesco, Asda, Co-Op or Lidl (all approx 25 mile round trip). Cheers. Bill Any whole bean recommendations? Cheers. Bill

I'm definitely coming down in favour of Columbian coffee.

WHat type of coffee do you like? I don't think I really know enough about proper coffee to state a strong preference, I'm in the foothills of getting a better understanding - I'm really looking for recommendations on excellent beans to try out, rather than waste time and money on second rate stuff. Thanks. Cheers. Bill

Try some Columbian and/or Ethiopian and see how you get on from there.

More specifically, I can recommend the following: - San Augustin Columbian from Whittards - Colombian Quinchia from Sainsbury Both available as beans and ground.

There are also online suppliers with good reputations. Where are you based?

Thanks for the advice. I'm based in North Devon, closest shop is a small Sainsbury's (12 mile round trip), otherwise a Tesco, Lidl, Co-Op, large Sainsbury and Asda (all 24-30 mile round trip).
Following Tim's earlier suggestion I've picked up some Tesco's Finest Columbian Supremo (and some Sumatra Mandheling) - but waiting for my grinder to be delivered before I can get started on them!
Cheers. Bill

I was wondering, how well do the supermarket coffee beans keep after roasting if the package is unopened. I notice the Tesco packages are both dated 'use by Nov 18' - so I suppose they assume at least a 12 month shelf life!
Cheers. Bill

Damn you, Martin! Why did I have to re-read this thread just prior to doing my Sainsbury's online order. Ground Quinchia ordered. I've been using bog-standard Lavazza Rossa so it'll be interesting to make the comparison. I'm also currently using Sainsbury's own "Fairtrade Continental" (Strength=5) beans. So if I enjoy the ground Quinchia I may try the whole beans too.

I looked and could only see a Best By date.
